Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson to Star in ‘Ball and Chain’ Superhero Project at Netflix

Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson‘s latest project has found a home at Netflix. Ball and Chain, a superhero package starring the two actors, will be adapted by Oscar nominee Emily V. Gordon for the streaming service, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The upcoming film is inspired by Scott Lobdell’s 90s comic of the same name, which follows a husband and wife team who are granted superpowers that come with a catch: they only function when the couple is together. Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia will produce Ball and Chain for Seven Bucks Productions with Kevin Misher’s Misher Films. The project will mark the first producing effort for Blunt under her company, Ledbury Productions.

“One of our main initiatives at Seven Bucks is to continue to find the best platforms to tell stories that entertain and inspire on a global scale,” Johnson said in a statement. “Netflix is the perfect partner to deliver this epic superhero/romantic comedy experience alongside us, and we’re excited to be back in business with the Netflix team. I’m also excited to not only reunite with dear friend Emily Blunt in front of the camera, but to also collaborate as producing partners as we bring Emily V. Gordon’s script to life.”

“Dwayne and Emily have a chemistry together that is unmatched in our business right now, added Scott Stuber, Head of Netflix Film. “They are the perfect duo to bring Emily V. Gordon’s electric superhero story to life, and take the world of Ball and Chain to new heights.”

Ball and Chain brings Johnson and Blunt together again after the duo worked on Disney’s Jungle Cruise, which was originally scheduled to premiere last October before being pushed to a later date this summer, then delayed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Gordon, who will write the script for Ball and Chain, previously worked on The Big Sicka film based on her own life starring her husband, Kumail Nanjiani.
