Mark Hamill Reveals He Wanted A Darker ‘Return of the Jedi’ Ending For Luke Skywalker

Mark Hamill revealed that he wasn’t always pleased with the plans for his Star Wars character, Luke Skywalker. In an interview on the EW Live podcast, Hamill opened up about a disagreement he had with Star Wars creator George Lucas regarding the original Star Wars trilogy, IndieWire reports.

Hamill was itching for a more intense ending for Skywalker, he explained, wanting a fate that would align with the darker tone and plot in Empire Strikes Back. Instead, Lucas planned a much happier, more family-friendly ending for Hamill’s character. “I remember complaining to George [Lucas] about something in Return of the Jedi,” Hamill said on the EW podcast. “And I said, ‘It’s so predictable and pat,’ and he said, ‘Mark, don’t forget. These things were made for children.'”

The actor explained that Lucas’ plans for the franchise were much lighter than what he had had hoped for, but he eventually conceded to the filmmaker’s vision. “His original intention was to make movies for, you know, kids!” Hamill said. “Adolescents and younger. And we’re bringing our adult sensibilities to it and that’s where we go wrong.”

Hamill admitted that Lucas ultimately knew what he was doing with the Skywalker, and expressed his admiration for the creator he worked alongside with for so many films, calling him “the man.” “He knows what he wants, and I realized he was right,” Hamill said. “He said, ‘All fairy tales get tied up neatly at the end.’ Because I thought after Empire we should really go crazy as possible with the last one, but there’s a reason why George is where he is and I’m where I am.”

Why did Hamill want Skywalker to become evil so badly? Turns out it all had to do with his first reading of the script. “I thought I was turning evil because I was wearing all black,” he explained. “I thought I would go to the dark side in the last one. And, of course, you have to redeem yourself. But that movie is the way I felt it was going with the preceding episode, but every actor wants to play their own evil twin.”

While Hamill didn’t get to play his “own evil twin” in Star Wars, he did get to play a slightly darker character with his guest appearance on What We Do In The Shadows this week. The actor appeared on Season 2 of the show as a vampire hunting down Laszlo to pay rent on a room he stayed in decades ago — and he even got to film some fight scenes, complete with hissing, barking and flames, as part of his special guest role.
