Whoopi Goldberg Destroys Chris Christie in Fiery Interview: “Who Are You Sacrificing” in Your Family?

Whoopi Goldberg: 1, Chris Christie: 0. Friday morning on The View, Goldberg absolutely destroyed the former New Jersey governor for insisting that we must reopen the economy because “there are going to be deaths no matter what.” As Christie attempted to clarify his cavalier remarks, Goldberg repeatedly interrupted to ask which of his family members he would be willing to “give up” to the novel coronavirus. “Who are you willing to sacrifice to die, Chris?” asked the longtime moderator.

The women of The View have spent much of the week railing against Republicans who wish to open the economy even as the coronavirus continues to spread, but they had something extra special in store for Christie this morning. Goldberg wasted no time before bringing up the former governor’s headline-making CNN interview, in which he said that the “economic devastation” caused by the virus is “equally sad” as the death toll. “Of course everybody wants to save every life they can — but the question is, towards what end, ultimately?” said Christie at the time.

“You upset a lot of people for saying that the country needs to reopen because people are going to die no matter what,” said Goldberg on Friday morning. “Since you’re suggesting that I sacrifice, who are you sacrificing? Who are you willing to give up in your family?”

Christie insisted that Goldberg’s question presented “a false choice,” as high unemployment and suicide rates have caused a different kind of hardship for Americans. But The View co-host wouldn’t have it: she once again asked him which of his family members he’s willing to let die to save the economy, explaining, “That’s what you’re saying.”

“Whoopi, that’s not what I said,” replied Christie, now visibly frustrated. “I said lives are going to be lost inevitably.”

Goldberg pressed harder, quoting his words back to him. “So, you didn’t say some Americans are going to have to make the ultimate ‘sacrifice?'” she asked. “You did not say that?”

“I said some Americans will make that sacrifice no matter what we do,” said Christie, adding that “we have to balance” the human toll with the economic. “[We’re] destroying the economy and destroying, as a result, people’s lives, and their hope.”

Christie clearly thought he was out of the woods, but Goldberg’s co-hosts wouldn’t let him off so easy. When Joy Behar slammed Republicans for refusing to pass aid programs that would help everyday Americans, Christie insisted that her jab was “unfair” to his party and nothing more than “a typical Democratic talking point.”

“Then why is everybody crying that they have no money and have no job!” yelled Behar. “Because people want their lives back!” he replied.

“They want their jobs back, not their lives!” ripped Behar, explaining that people don’t have money for food, rent, or basic services. “That’s what they’re crying about. I don’t see the Republican party helping them. All they’re doing is blaming everyone else.”
