Chadwick Boseman is a Fallen Vietnam Soldier in Spike Lee’s ‘Da 5 Bloods’ Trailer for Netflix

Da 5 Bloods trailer, which you can watch above, dropped on Monday morning, and it looks like director Spike Lee is in prime form with his latest offering.

The new movie for Netflix, which is hitting the streaming service on June 12, stars Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr. as four aging Vietnam War veterans—Paul, Otis, Eddie, and Melvin—who return to the country where they fought. Accompanied by Paul’s son (Jonathan Majors), the four men come to Vietnam in search of their fallen comrade (Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman) and buried treasure. But along the way, they are confronted with, according to the official synopsis, “the lasting ravages of The Immorality of The Vietnam War.”

In other words, this is a Vietnam War movie that deals with the racist, imperialist, and humanitarian side of the war in the way that only Spike Lee can. While one shouldn’t put too much stock in a three-minute trailer, Da 5 Bloods already looks like one of Netflix’s best original films yet. Seriously, watch the trailer above. Doesn’t that look like a great movie? And if you’re looking for the song from the Da 5 Bloods trailer—it’s “Time Has Come Today” by The Chambers Brothers. You’re welcome.

Lee, who was nominated for Best Director at the Oscars in 2018 for his biographical crime film BlacKkKlansman, joins a growing list of prestigious directors who have turned to Netflix to finance and release their films, including Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) and Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story). BlacKkKlansman was the first of Lee’s films to receive significant recognition at the Oscars, but the Do the Right Thing director might have an even better shot this year—especially considering the fact that the Academy is allowing films not released in theaters to compete this year, as a special COVID-19 exception.

But we’re probably getting ahead of ourselves. For now, you can just start counting down the days until you can stream the new Spike Lee joint at home.
