‘Single Parents’: Come For Your Adam Brody and Leighton Meester Obsession, Stay For TV’s Best Ensemble Cast

Joey Tribiani once theorized that the more chemistry an acting pair have in a scene, the less they would possess as a real-life couple, and vice versa. Well, it’s too bad that he (a fictional character, yes) has clearly never seen the ABC sitcom Single Parents because Leighton Meester and her real-life husband Adam Brody are clearly proving him wrong. Spoilers ahead!

Single Parents just finished its wonderful second season (it’s all available to watch now on Hulu!) and I’m going to need all your fingers and toes to be tightly crossed so that a third one comes to be. The end of Season 1 presented us with the perfect reveal of Brody as Derek, the father of Angie D’Amato’s (Meester) son Graham (Tyler Wladis), and it was immediately clear to see why her character would fall for him as Derek, a dirtbag musician, but like, a hot dirtbag musician, you know? Sure, the characters hadn’t spoken in years and encountered each other while he was working the drive-thru window at a fast food restaurant and she was crouched in the backseat of a car. Talk about a meet (again) cute!

The show wisely spent Season 2 sprinkling Derek (and his pet turtle) into the mix, using his guest star status correctly, dropping him in for sweet moments and to also wreak a little havoc, some that he didn’t even know he was causing. The chemistry is clear between the two actors, and for us viewers, well, what a treat it is to watch them work opposite each other knowing: you guys already like each other! How fun! It also serves as a reminder that even though these two rose to fame in the world of Josh Schwartz’s soapy teen dramas, they’ve only since proven their fantastic comedic chops.

Though it should be noted that Meester isn’t the only one it’s fun to watch Brody play with. While her character is feeling her heart pulled in two separate directions, ultimately deciding to spend the summer in Barstow to see if there was a future with Derek, deep down she also loves Will, played by the wonderful Taran Killam — who returns her feelings! So to watch the two gents together in scenes consistently delivers as well. It almost makes it hard for viewers to choose who Angie should really be with, even if the answer is definitely Will — but that’s why we’re gonna need that Season 3 to make it happen!

Plus, there’s also the fact that the Single Parents ensemble is easily one of the best currently on TV, without a doubt. Kimrie Lewis as Poppy is the effervescent best friend we all want, Brad Garrett as Douglas is a classic, charming curmudgeon, and Jake Choi as Miggy is endlessly cool. They’re also flanked by a cast of child actors that are truly at the top of their game, portraying this group of dynamic young people — seriously, this is what they mean by “the best in the biz.”

The internet just loves remembering that Brody and Meester are a real couple — and even expecting their second child together, how sweet! But the two actors seem to delight in the fact that they’re a couple as well, judging from how much fun they seem to be having on-screen in these roles, especially considering they’re one of Hollywood’s most (justifiably) private couples. Quite simply, it’s impossible to not be charmed by the work they’re doing together on this show. But it’s far from the only exciting thing happening on Single Parents. Regular viewers know exactly how rewatchable this sitcom is, especially if you care about things like catching all the lightning-fast jokes this show drops in every half-hour episode. And if you’ve never seen this family show before, what a great, light binge to embark on right now — a decision even Seth and Blair would agree on.
