There are upsides and downsides to the coronavirus pandemic. The downsides include the hundreds of thousands of deaths, the lost jobs, the collapsing economy, and the total lockdown of modern society. But the upside? You get to watch the new Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae movie, The Lovebirds, on Netflix on Friday.

The Lovebirds was originally meant to have a theatrical release date in April, but thanks to COVID-19 and the shut down of theaters worldwide, Paramount Pictures opted to instead sell the film to Netflix. While it’s bummer we won’t get to laugh as a group at the comedy power duo that is Nanjiani and Rae, at least we aren’t being robbed of their talents completely. Directed by Michael Showalter (who also recently directed Nanjiani in The Big Sick), The Lovebirds is a romantic comedy with a not-so-romantic premise. Jibran (Nanjiani) and Leilani (Issa Rae) are a couple who witness a murder and are caught at the crime scene looking very guilty. It’s not their fault! The murderer told them he was a cop! Now the only hope they have is to catch the real murderer themselves.

Can they do it? Sure, probably! This is a movie! But it’s about the journey, you know? Written by Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall, The Lovebirds looks really funny, even if it is the comedy version of Queen & Slim. But when will The Lovebirds be on Netflix? You don’t want to miss it, so here’s when to tune in.

The Lovebirds will begin streaming on Netflix on Friday, May 22. Go ahead and blow-off those virtual happy hour drink plans.
