Here’s Why HBO Series Like ‘The Sopranos’, ‘The Wire’ Left Amazon Prime

If you’re trying to watch your favorite HBO classics on Amazon Prime Video, you’re going to be disappointed. It seems May 20 was the last day Amazon Prime Video subscribers could watch select HBO series like True Blood, Entourage, and Sex and the City for free. That means The Sopranos is no longer on Prime Video, Curb Your Enthusiasm is gone from Prime Video, and Veep is also gone, potentially for good.

In 2014, HBO began a partnership with Prime Video to license key titles for Amazon’s growing streaming library. As of 2015, Prime subscribers could stream and download all of The Sopranos, The Wire, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Sex and the City. Last November, a Reddit thread reported that HBO was gearing up to take these titles off of Prime Video but that Amazon had negotiated for a six month extension on the deal. However, as of May 21, HBO had pulled all seasons of The Sopranos, Entourage, The Wire, True Blood, Veep, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Sex and the City from the Prime Video library.

According to a spokesperson from HBO, “those licensed shows are now available exclusively on the HBO service. Prime users can still watch them by subscribing to HBO via Prime Channels. They’ll continue to be available on HBO GO/NOW and will also be available on HBO Max as part of the HBO service.”

An Amazon spokesperson also confirmed this to Decider and added that in addition to being able to access these titles with an HBO add-on on Prime Channels, customers could buy or rent these shows on Prime Video.

The timing of this is interesting as WarnerMedia is set to launch its own standalone streaming service, HBO Max next Wednesday, May 27. HBO Max will add the likes of Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Wonder Woman, Looney Tunes, Rick & Morty, and even CNN’s library of documentaries to HBO’s already substantial library. If you have HBO Now, the standalone OTT streaming service, you will have access to HBO Max for no additional charge.
