HBO Max Movies: 11 Classic Films For You To Stream

HBO’s new streaming service, HBO Max, launched today, bringing with it a library of hundreds of films for subscribers to watch on Day 1. And while the price of HBO Max is a steep cost for the current slate of original programming, the library of classic films on HBO Max might just be worth that $14.99/month.

Major streaming services have rarely been a friend to classic film fans. Netflix rarely carries more than a handful of movies made before 1970 at any given time, and many film buffs are still mourning the loss of FilmStruck, a streaming service from Turner Classic Movies that also housed the Criterion Collection of films, which shut down in 2018. The good news? Not only does HBO Max have much of the Criterion Collection, but it also houses classic Warner Bros.-owned movies. That means iconic titles like Citizen Kane, Casablanca, and Singin’ in the Rain are now finally available on a subscription streaming service.

You can also, of course, access the Criterion library on the Criterion Channel, the Criterion Collection’s own replacement for FilmStruck. But while the Channel is great for finding classic hidden gems, the cost of licensing major films from major studios means that some of the more mainstream hits you see on TCM aren’t available. On the other hand, HBO Max—a Warner Media company—has access to the entire Warner film catalog, and it is vast. You could easily knock off a good chunk of American Film Institute’s 100 best American movies using HBO Max alone. And since most of us are still in quarantine, now would be a great time to fill in those gaps in your watchlist.

Decider has highlighted 11 of the most iconic classic films coming to HBO Max, and you can scroll down for the complete list of classic movies and Criterion Collection movies on HBO Max.

1

'Citizen Kane' (1941)

Citizen Kane has been called “the greatest film ever made” for over half a century, so it’s about time Orson Welle’s masterpiece ended up on a subscription streaming service. If you haven’t seen it, you really should. This epic about a media mogul—loosely based on William Randolph Hearst, starring Welles himself—absolutely holds up as a riveting drama, even by today’s fast-paced standards. Trust me, if you love The Social Network, you’ll love Citizen Kane.

'Casablanca' (1942)

Casablanca

Like Citizen Kane, the lasting legacy of Casablanca is almost too significant to put into words. The iconic quotes are endless— “We’ll always have Paris,” “Here’s looking at you, kid,” “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship,”—and the love story between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman is one of the most swoon-worthy in history. And now, Casablanca is finally on a streaming service!

What did I tell you guys? The Warner library of classic films is no joke. That includes Stanley Kubrick’s genre-defining science-fiction epic, 2001: A Space Odyssey, all about a voyage to Jupiter with the sentient computer HAL. You may know this movie best by its epic theme song, but if you’re a sci-fi fan, this is a must-watch.

'Singin' in the Rain' (1952)

Widely regarded as the best movie musical ever made, as well as just one of the best movies ever made, period, it’s never the wrong time to watch—or rewatch, and rewatch, and rewatch—this gently mocking love letter to Hollywood in the late 1920s, starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds.

'North by Northwest' (1959)

North By Northwest

Yes, HBO Max has Alfred Hitchcock films, too. His most famous, Psycho, sadly, is a Paramount property and therefore not available, but North by Northwest, considered to be “the ultimate Hitchcock film,” is now at your fingertips. Famous for its unforgettable set pieces that finds Cary Grant ducking planes and scaling Mount Rushmore, North by Northwest is an undeniable classic.

'Rebel Without A Cause' (1955)

James Dean and Natalie Wood ushered in a new era of filmmaking with Rebel Without a Cause, a groundbreaking film about troubled teens that has now influenced hundreds of coming-of-age films. If you want to know why James Dean is a cultural icon, watch this movie.

'Gone With the Wind' (1939)

Gone with the Wind

This wildly popular epic historical romance has stood the test of time as the pinnacle of a classic Hollywood film, despite its pretty racist views on slavery and African Americans. Mostly though, it’s about Scarlett O’Hara, a spoiled rich Southern girl (Vivien Leigh), who falls in love with the infuriating Rhett Butler (Clark Gable). As God as our witness, we’ll never not be able to stream Gone With the Wind again!

'An American in Paris' (1951)

How about another musical for these dark times? You might as well make it one of the greatest musicals of all time, aka An American in Paris starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. This is essential viewing for any musical fans, but especially musical fans who loved La La Land.

'Bringing Up Baby' (1938)

Classic films knew how to be funny, too, and one of the funniest might be Bringing Up Baby, a screwball comedy that finds Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn in possession of a leopard named “Baby.” Comedy fans looking to do their homework should absolutely have this on their lists.

'King Kong' (1933)

Talk about iconic—the original King Kong from 1933 has spawned a franchise so large, sometimes it’s easy to forget the significance the movie has in film history. This pre-code monster movie is definitely worth a watch, though, as with the modern-day Kong films, it’s less interesting when the giant gorilla isn’t on screen.

'Cool Hand Luke' (1967)

COOL HAND LUKE, Paul Newman, 1967

Paul Newman as a prisoner who refuses to comply is the definition of an all-American classic. I feel like I’m having trouble conveying just how significant this film is, so I guess you might say, “What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.”

Here’s a complete list of the classic films and Criterion Collection films available on HBO Max so far. Note that some of these titles may not be available on the day of launch.
