Private Prison Group Claims Netflix Defamed Their Facilities in ‘Messiah’

Netflix canceled Messiah after just one season, but the show is still causing troubles for the streaming service. Private prison operator The GEO Group filed a lawsuit against Netflix today, claiming that the show defamed them in two episodes, Variety reports.

In Episodes 3 and 4 of Messiah, GEO Group logos are displayed at an immigration facility in Texas, and the private prison operator is now claiming that the conditions portrayed in the facility are defamatory — in the show, inmates do not have beds to sleep in, the area is overcrowded and everyone is kept inside by chain link fences surrounding the property.

The company denied that their facilities resemble what is represented in Messiah, arguing that their detention centers have multiple amenities for inmates and have more humane conditions. “Unlike in Messiah, GEO does not house people in overcrowded rooms with chainlink cages at its Facilities, but provides beds, bedding, air conditioning, indoor and outdoor recreational spaces, soccer fields, classrooms, libraries, and other amenities that rebut Messiah’s defamatory falsehoods,” their complaint states.

The GEO Group is also claiming that by using their logos in Messiah, Netflix is guilty of trademark infringement.

“Netflix’s use of the GEO Trademarks served no purpose other than to harm GEO’s good will and reputation,” the company states in their suit. “Because GEO’s Facilities do not resemble the facilities depicted in Messiah, use of the GEO Trademarks does not further a goal of realism.”

Netflix has not provided comment on the lawsuit, according to Variety. The GEO Group is currently facing its own lawsuits regarding unfair payment of inmates.

Messiah follows the rise of a mysterious man from the Middle East whose followers claim he’s like Jesus because of his ability to make miracles happen. Season 1 of Messiah first premiered in January this year with ten episodes on Netflix. In March, it was announced that the short-lived drama had been canceled.
