Powered by Reelgood

Let’s be honest: You’re not going to subscribe to HBO Max for the originals. At least, you’re not going to yet, no matter how charming that Anna Kendrick might be. But you might just subscribe to HBO Max for the HBO Max movies list, which currently has over 600 titles and counting. You can check out the full content lineup courtesy of Decider’s Brett White, but cinephiles will be particularly tempted by the film selection. From a robust collection of classic films to the entire Harry Potter franchise, HBO Max really does have the movies.

That said, there are an awful lot of movies to sort through. If you’re a list person, you can scroll down to the bottom of this article for the complete list of every movie on HBO Max for the time being. Keep in mind that more titles will soon be added in June, while other titles will leave, as with the regular HBO Now or HBO Go. (By the way, if you’re confused about whether or not you have HBO Max if you have HBO Now or HBO Go, the answer is: You probably have it. Decider’s Meghan O’Keefe broke it down for you.)

HBO Max has also broken its content down into hubs. You can find movies under the following categories: “HBO,” for all the movies you’d find on normal HBO; “DC,” for titles in the DC Extended Universe; “Classics Curated by TCM,” for classic Warner Bros. films as well as Criterion Collection titles; and “Studio Ghibli,” for the entire 21-film catalog of Studio Ghibli films. In an effort to make your life easier, I’ve highlighted a film recommendation from each hub to get you started on your HBO Max watchlist. I also threw in a Harry Potter rec, because, well, why not? Happy streaming!

From TCM: 'Casblanca' (1942)

HBO Max has an incredibly robust collection of classic films, curated by TCM. My top pick? The very definition of a classic: Casablanca. It feels a little strange to write a “review” of Casablanca, widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. But the popularity of this wartime romance from director Michael Curtiz has withstood the years for a reason: It’s, like, really good. The love story between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman is one of the most swoon-worthy in history, the quotes are endless, and the lighting is a treat for cinematography nerds. But, in addition to romance, Casablanca also managed to capture the feeling of fear, despair, and uncertainty of World War II while World War II was still going on. The war, in fact, had barely begun in the States. Somehow, writers Julius J. Epstein. Philip G. Epstein, and Howard Koch put together a script with insight and perspective that would define that era for the next 50 years. That, my friends, is true genius.

From Studio Ghibli: 'My Neighbor Totoro' (1988)

HBO Max has every Studio Ghibli film, and while Spirited Away is probably the most well-known and most-recommended Hayao Miyazaki film, my favorite has always been My Neighbor Totoro. Nostalgia no doubt has a lot to do with that, but this delightful children’s fantasy—which follows two young sisters who befriend a fluffy wood spirit only they can see named Totoro—feels like coming home after a very long day. The animation, like all Miyazaki films, is beautiful, and the adventures, like the Cat Bus, are creative and inventive. Featuring the voices of Tim Daly, Lea Salonga, and Dakota and Elle Fanning, My Neighbor Totoro is perfect for both new generations of children and for nostalgia-seeking adults.

From DC: 'Wonder Woman' (2017)

HBO Max’s DC hub includes some but not all of the new DC Extended Universe films, some of the Batman live-action films from the ’80s, and more. It does not include the much-loved Christopher Nolan Batman films, but, thankfully, they do have Wonder Woman. I still remember the feeling of pure, unencumbered joy as I left my local movie theater (‘Memba those things?) in 2017, having just seen this film. Director Patty Jenkins really did that. She really made a DC superhero movie that was romantic, inspiring, funny, and all-around enjoyable to watch. Gal Gadot and Chris Pine are a perfect dorky, banter-y couple. And, while the plot wasn’t exactly memorable, I will never forget that epic No Man’s Land scene, buoyed by Rupert Gregson-Williams’s rousing score.

From HBO: 'Bad Education' (2020)

Any title on regular HBO is also available on HBO Max, including HBO originals. Bad Education—the HBO original film which is now available on HBO Now, Go, and Max—is my favorite Hugh Jackman performance to date. This is Jackman sans beard, sans digitally-enhanced abs, and sans mutant metal claws. Instead, he stars as Frank Tassone, the real-life superintendent who was convicted for stealing over $2 million from the Roslyn public school district. He’s criminal who literally stole millions from tax-payers, but with a tender hand of director Cory Finley; a smart, compelling script from Mike Makowsky (who was a Rolsyn middle-schooler when Tassone was convicted); and a passionate performance from Jackman, you end up feeling kinda sorry for the guy. Bad Education argues that educators—some of the most underpaid, undervalued professionals in our country—ought to be treated with the same respect as Wall Street guys. Is that really so wrong?

From Harry Potter: 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' (2002)

It’s impossible for me to view the Potter films—all of which are on HBO Max in a last-minute move—through any sort of objective lens, being a die-hard fan since the age of 12. But I’d like to make the case that Chamber of Secrets, directed by Chris Columbus and written by Steve Kloves, is the best of the franchise. Everyone is still adorable, the atmosphere is still magical in a childlike way, and that basilisk is legitimately terrifying. I’d argue this movie is the only one that improved upon the source material—every great scene from the book was included, while the boring scenes (read: the Death-Day party) were cut. Perhaps that’s also why it’s the longest of the eight films, with the extended version clocking in at a jaw-dropping two-hours and 54 minutes. (Really!) I’ll say this: Even after dozens of viewings, I still tear up when the Great Hall cheers for Hagrid. Every time.
