Before you dive into Dirty John: Betty Broderick, make sure you have all the facts straight. Who is Betty Broderick? Who is in the Dirty John: Betty Broderick USA cast? Here’s everything you need to know about the true story behind the Dirty John: Betty TV show.

WHO IS BETTY BRODERICK IN THE DIRTY JOHN: BETTY TRUE STORY?

Betty Broderick is a convicted murderer accused of killing her ex-husband, Daniel T. Broderick III, and his second wife, Linda Kolkena Broderick, in 1989. Earlier that decade, Betty and Daniel’s marriage broke down after she accused him of having an affair with Linda, then his legal assistant at the time. Their contentious divorce played out in the La Jolla, California courts for five years, until finally, in 1989, their divorce was finalized. But the Brodericks’ story was far from over.

By the time Daniel and Linda married in April 1989, Betty’s behavior had become increasingly erratic. She ignored countless restraining orders, left threatening voicemails, and vandalized her ex-husband’s new home. Seven months after the wedding, Betty broke into Daniel and Linda’s home and shot them while they were sleeping, killing them both.

A few hours later, Betty turned herself into the police. Despite arriving at the house with a .38 revolver, she insisted that the murder was not premeditated; during the second trial (the first was declared a mistrial), Betty claimed that she fired the gun only after Linda screamed, “Call the police!”

Betty Broderick’s case ignited a media firestorm, and both trials were heavily covered by the press. In 1991, she was convicted on two counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to 32 years to life in prison. She has since requested parole multiple times, but has been repeatedly denied.

HOW WILL USA’S DIRTY JOHN DRAMATIZE THE BETTY BRODERICK STORY?

Like the first season of Dirty JohnBetty Broderick USA picks up long before the crime is committed. The drama series follows Betty, a Southern California homemaker, as she slowly begins to realize that her perfect marriage isn’t as it seems. Betty spent years supporting her husband, Dan, as he toiled in medical and law school, but he’s ungrateful; when he finally becomes a big-shot lawyer in San Diego, he takes on a young new assistant and begins an affair.

“Betty’s attempts to fight back and enraged refusals to accept reality only serve to isolate and destabilize her until she loses her very identity,” the show’s official description reads. “And Dan’s cold confidence blinds him to the bear he has created, and won’t stop poking… until it’s too late.”
