‘Tiger King’s Carole Baskin to Take Over Joe Exotic’s Oklahoma Zoo, Judge Rules

Carole Baskin has one-upped Tiger King‘s Joe Exotic, once again. This week, a federal judge granted Baskin control of Exotic’s zoo, the G.W. Exotic Animal Memorial Park in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. According to Courthouse News, the judge determined that Exotic fraudulently transferred the property to his mother to avoid paying Baskin a $1 million trademark judgement.
On Monday, Oklahoma City judge Scott L. Palk ruled that Baskin, owner of the Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida, should be given control of Exotic’s former zoo properties, as Exotic (real name Joseph Maldonado-Passage) improperly transferred the title to his mother, Shirley Schreibvogel, in 2011. Judge Palk granted Baskin control of all 16.4 acres of the G.W. Exotic Animal Park, as well as several cars and cabins on the property.

Courthouse News reports that Schreibvogel “admitted under oath that the zoo land was transferred to her by Joe Maldonado to remove it from the reach of creditors, including BCR.” Baskin’s Big Cat Rescue has sued Exotic and his various counterparts several times. In 2011, she claimed the G.W. Exotic Animal Park committed trademark infringement, and Exotic was ordered to pay her $1 million. The fraudulent transfer suit resolved on Monday was initially filed in 2016.

The G.W. Exotica Animal Park is currently owned by Jeff Lowe, another Tiger King player. Under Palk’s order, Lowe and his zoo staff are required to leave the property within 120 days and remove all zoo animals.
Palk’s ruling is the latest twist in the Exotic vs. Baskin saga, much of which was featured in hit Netflix docuseries Tiger King. Exotic is currently serving a 22-year sentence for hiring a hitman to murder Baskin and for violating the Endangered Species Act. The Netflix docuseries, released in March, made him a household name, but he has since said that he’s “done with the Carole Baskin saga.” Does that mean he won’t be appealing Judge Palk’s ruling? That’s up to the the “gay, gun-carrying redneck with a mullet” to decide.
