‘Cops’ and ‘Live PD’ Both Pulled From Programming as Nation Protests Police Violence

Two networks are pulling police documentary shows from their programming schedules as protests continue across the nation. A&E will not run new episodes of Live PD, and Paramount Network is delaying Season 33 of Cops, Variety reports.

The news comes at a time when protesters are fighting for the police to be defunded and are calling out officers for brutality, racism and violence against Black Americans like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and Ahmaud Arbery.

“Out of respect for the families of George Floyd and others who have lost their lives, in consultation with the departments we follow, and in consideration for the safety of all involved, we have made the decision not to broadcast Live PD this weekend,” A&E said in a statement.

Instead of airing Live PD this weekend, A&E will broadcast episodes of Live Rescue in the show’s place. Live PD, which premiered on A&E in 2016, follows police and sheriffs across America as they patrol their cities and towns in realtime.

Paramount has not yet issued a formal statement about their decision to postpone Cops, but the network has not been airing the long-running police program at all this week — while it normally airs on Monday nights, Paramount did not show an episode of Cops in its usual time slot June 1. And the future of Cops on Paramount is looking uncertain; the network has scrubbed any mention of the show from its website.

In place of the Cops Season 33 premiere on June 8, Paramount has scheduled a showing of Ghostbusters for 10/9c. IndieWire reports that Paramount has no plans to return Cops to its broadcasting schedule “at this stage.”

First launched in 1989 on Fox, Cops has been criticized in recent years for its portrayal of police and questionable behind-the-scenes tactics. After Season 25, Cops moved to Spike TV, now called Paramount. The ViacomCBS network went dark for eight minutes and 46 seconds — the amount of time Officer Derek Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck, killing him — on June 1 to honor Floyd.
