This month Netflix is paying its respects to doctors everywhere with its latest docuseries. Lenox Hill follows a handful of medical professionals who make one of the most esteemed hospitals in the country run. But where exactly is this remarkable hospital?

What makes Lenox Hill so special when compared to other hospitals is that it was never supposed to be special at all. By all expectations it should have been just another perfectly fine medical facility in a city full of that very thing. Instead, its doctors, surgeons, and directors have worked to make Lenox Hill an internationally recognized treasure. Here’s hoping you never have to go there. But in case you’re curious where these medical saviors spend their working hours, we’ve got your back.

Where Is Lenox Hill?

Lenox Hill hospital is located in New York City. Specifically it’s in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. What makes this particular hospital so remarkable is its dedication to above and beyond patient care and medical treatment. Though it can be seen as just another of New York’s many hospitals, Lenox Hill has some of the best doctors in the world and one of the best reputations for patient care in the country.

This dedication to bringing an extraordinary medical experience to the average person can be traced back to Lenox Hill’s roots. The hospital was founded in 1857 after community leaders realized there was a need for medical services among the immigrant community. With that in mind the German Dispensary, later renamed Lenox Hill, was founded.

Today the hospital treats 163,000 patients each year on average. Forty-five percent of those patients come from Manhattan with the other 55 percent coming from New York City’s other four boroughs, other parts of the country, and aboard. But despite primarily treating New Yorkers, Lenox Hill is internationally known for its excellence. Its best known for its wonderful patient care as well as its innovative medical and surgical treatments, specifically when it comes to brain tumors and neurology. Both of those strengths are portrayed throughout the docuseries.

Hardly a minute goes by without a different doctor or nurse kindly asking a patient about their families while they sit through their examinations. Those questions aren’t routine chatter, as these medical professionals explain. They truly want to know who their patients are, especially those patients who predominantly live on the streets and may not have a reliable support system. That kindness is often paired with medical expertise. One major plot revolves around a young mother from Tennessee with a terrifying brain tumor. According to her and her partner, none of the hospitals around them were willing to risk operating on her, but Lenox Hill with its specialists in brain tumors took her case. It just goes to show even in one of the busiest cities in the world, there’s a haven for humanity and compassion.
