Netflix Bet $300 Million On Ryan Murphy — They'd Be Fools Not To Give Him Even More
The race is bigger and the stakes are higher in the new season of The Politician. Ryan Murphy‘s political comedy has returned for Season 2, and Netflix just released the trailer today.
The Politician returns after the Season 1 time jump, and Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) is back, but this time, he’s vying for a seat in the New York State Senate as part of his plan to take the presidency. Standing in his way is a different opponent than what he’s faced in the past: Incumbent Dede Standish (Judith Light), whose election campaign has been thrown out of whack with Payton’s entrance into the race. With the help of her loyal Chief of Staff, Hadassah Gold (Bette Midler), Dede does everything she can to cling onto her Senate seat.
In today’s trailer, Payton tries his best to take down Dede, revealing her part in a “throuple.” But Hadassah digs up her own secrets about Payton, threatening to release an embarrassing photograph of him posing nearly nude and wearing a headdress. “We’re destroying him,” she tells Dede. “You’ll thank me later.” There’s also “spicy lube,” multiple positive pregnancy tests, one traitorous campaign member, plenty of tears and many Nancy Meyers jokes — and it’s all packed into three minutes.
“Gloves off, claws out. Get ready for the spiciest and most iconic election battle in NYC history,” reads Netflix’s description of Season 2.
Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Georgina Hobart, Payton’s mother, along with Season 1 cast members Zoey Deutch, David Corenswet and Lucy Boynton. Payton’s Season 1 election crew also comes back for his Senate race, with Alice (Julia Schlaepfer), McAfee (Laura Dreyfuss), James (Theo Germaine), and Skye (Rahne Jones) all included in the new season. Season 2 was filmed before the coronavirus pandemic, and includes seven full episodes.
The Politician returns to Netflix for Season 2 June 19. Watch the full trailer in the video above.
