‘Doom Patrol’ Recap: Everything You Need to Know Going into Season 2

You ready to get weird? Well, you better get ready, because Doom Patrol is back. The bizarre, not-quite-superheroes are at it again with a brand new season on a brand new streaming service: HBO Max. That’s the biggest cosmetic change for Season 2, as series stars Brendan Fraser, Matt Bomer, Timothy Dalton, Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, and Joivan Wade are all coming back for a second helping of weird.

It’s been over a year since we last hung out with Niles Caulder’s band of angry do-gooders, so what’s up? Where’d we leave them? Was their final adventure of 2019 as strange as we remember? Here’s what the stage looked like when the curtain fell on Doom Patrol Season 1.

How did Doom Patrol Season 1 end?

Brace yourselves for spoilers for the end of Season 1—! Ready? The end of Season 1 changed everything for the ragtag band of misfits that comprise the show’s cast. For one thing, they all found out that it was their Chief, Niles Caulder, who orchestrated all of the tragic calamities that turned all of them into inhuman creatures. Yep, the team spent a whole TV season searching for the man that totally ruined all of their lives and, in some cases, killed their loved ones.

Of course, the Chief had a reason! He did it out of love—a twisted interpretation of it, sure, but love all the same. That love was for—surprise!—a daughter that no one knew about. He sought to unlock the gift of immortality, so that he could ensure that he lives long enough to protect his daughter for her entire life. To protect her, he hid her with Danny the Street and told no one of her existence. The plan worked fine until Mr. Nobody got greedy.

Having thoroughly defeated Caulder, Mr. Nobody was left a bit aimless—and therefore susceptible to the mad, apocalyptic ramblings of the prophetic cockroach Ezekiel and his bloodthirsty rat companion, Admiral Whiskers. The three villains teamed up and decided to go one step further in the ruination of the Chief: Mr. Nobody wanted to track down Slava, the cavewoman that he loved so long ago. After paying off the Beard Hunter, a bounty hunter with a taste for follicles, Mr. Nobody made his way to Danny the Street and didn’t find Slava; he found Caulder and Slava’s all-powerful daughter, Dorothy.

Danny sent out an SOS to the team, forcing them to reunite with their deadbeat dad figure for one final mission. They leapt into action, literally leaping into a painting that Nobody used to trap Danny. Once inside, Cyborg concocted a genius plan: Rita convinced Mr. Nobody to put his omnipotent narration powers to work by puppet-mastering the actions of the newly Godzilla-sized Ezekiel and Admiral Whiskers. The rest of the team all made their way inside of Ezekiel, knowing that a giant cockroach would be able to withstand the nuclear blast unleashed by Larry Trainor’s fully fully unrestrained negative spirit. Boom.

When the smoke cleared, a normal-sized Ezekiel and a brick of Danny’s were left on Earth. Mr. Nobody and the Beard Hunter—who were not protected inside the cockroach—remain trapped in the painting. Our heroes cut their way out of Ezekiel’s belly, with Caulder’s daughter Dorothy in tow. Oh—but there’s one catch: they’re all still smaller than a cockroach while Larry is normal sized. Whoops!
