10 Best New Shows on Netflix: July 2020’s Top Upcoming Series to Watch

When the list of new releases on Netflix comes out every month, it sometimes feels like the leading streamer has opened up a fire hose of content of all types: scripted, unscripted, international, and more. With everyone’s limited time, it’s hard to figure out which shows you want to sit down and binge.

The crew at Decider know how tough it is to figure what to watch… and we do this for a living. So let us be your guide. Below are quick previews of what we think the ten hottest, most intriguing series to debut on the service in July will be. They aren’t all Netflix Originals (though most are because of that firehose); just shows we know people will want to watch. Which shows will make it into the Netflix Top 10? Only time will tell!

'Unsolved Mysteries'

PREMIERE DATE: July 1

CAST: Although the original Unsolved Mysteries had a host in its various incarnations, most famously Robert Stack from 1987-2002, this new version has no host.

RATING: TV-MA

DESCRIPTION: A new incarnation of the series that aired on NBC, CBS, Lifetime and SpikeTV from 1987-2010. The haunting theme song has been updated, and you see a ghostly image of Stack during the intro. But the series, produced by creators John Cosgrove and Terry Dunn Meurer, feels more like the slickly produced true-crime format that Netflix has aced over the past half-decade. In a new wrinkle, the cases are international, and anyone with leads is directed to the show’s website.

PREMIERE DATE: July 1

CAST: Jeremiah Brent, Thai Nguyen and Gabriele Bertaccini

RATING: TV-14

DESCRIPTION: From the producers of Queer Eye comes what can best be describes as “Queer Eye for weddings”. Three experts — Brent is an interior designer, Nguyen is a fashion designer and Bertaccini is a chef — swoop in and create surprise dream weddings for eight couples in this new series. Expect a lot of tears… oh, and the brides and grooms will be crying, too. You may just cry trying to add up how expensive everything about these weddings are.

PREMIERE DATE: July 2

CAST: Alba Baptista, Toya Turner, Tristan Ulloa, Lorena Andrea

RATING: TV-MA

DESCRIPTION: Based on Ben Dunn’s comic book character Warrior Nun Areala, Warrior Nun starts with a 19-year-old girl named Ava (Baptista) waking up in the morgue. Yes, the morgue. She apparently has gotten a new lease on life because the artifact embedded in her back is divinely blessed. She joins a group of warriors fighting demons on earth, and of course the inevitable battle for her soul between the forces of good and evil ensues.

'The Baby-Sitters Club'

PREMIERE DATE: July 3

CAST: Sophie Grace, Malia Baker, Momona Tanada, Shay Rudolph, Xochitl Gomez, Alicia Silverstone, Mark Feuerstein

RATING: TV-G

DESCRIPTION: Rachel Shukert (GLOW) has created an updated version of Ann M. Martin’s hugely popular book series, where a group of 5 middle-school girls create a baby sitting business and form a ultra-supportive, tightly-bonded group. Alicia Silverstone and Mark Feuerstein are also in the cast playing supportive and goofy parents (to the chagrin of many a Gen Xer). A little more diversity, and a few more nods to technology mark this series, but it’s the same feel-good vibe as the books and the 1990 TV series.

PREMIERE DATE: July 8

CAST: Cate Blanchett, Yvonne Strahovski, Dominic West, Asher Keddie, Fayssal Bazzi, Marta Dusseldorp, Jai Courtney

RATING: TV-MA

DESCRIPTION: Blanchett is one of the executive producers of this Australian drama based on a true story. Four strangers — a flight attendant, a refugee, a bureaucrat and a dad who wants to escape his life —  meet in an Australian detention center and make emotional connections as their situations get increasingly dire. Expect lots of talking, escapes, tough talk from government officials, and just enough of Blanchett to keep you watching for the entire series.

'Indian Matchmaking'

PREMIERE DATE: July 16

CAST: Seema Taparia

RATING: N/A

DESCRIPTION: The casting call for this docuseries calls for “upwardly mobile milennials in the U.S. and India who are serious about getting engaged or married.” The selected singles will work with Taparia, the “top desi matchmaker in the world,” who will get to know her clients face-to-face but also use methods like biodata and horoscope matching. A modernized look at the traditional arranged marriage process, it sounds like it’ll be much more than just the two singles meeting for dinner with their parents then getting engaged, doesn’t it?

'Cursed'

PREMIERE DATE: July 17

CAST: Katherine Langford, Devon Terrell, Gustaf Skarsgård, Peter Mullan

RATING: TV-MA

DESCRIPTION: Based on the graphic novel series by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler, Cursed tells the legend of King Arthur via the perspective of Nimue (Langford), who will eventually become the Lady In The Lake. Considering the story of Arthur has been told a zillion times, it might be a fresh perspective to see what happens to the Lady In The Lake before she, you know, goes into the lake.

'The Last Dance'

PREMIERE DATE: July 19

CAST: Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Phil Jackson, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr

RATING: TV-MA

DESCRIPTION: The ESPN docuseries that carried us all through the beginning of the pandemic shutdown finally arrives on Netflix (where it streamed in the rest of the world from day one). The story of the 1997-98 champion Chicago Bulls has generated all sorts of news and bitterness between former teammates. But what we learned during the series is that, yes, MJ is just that intense. Now you get to watch it with all the cursing intact.

'Love On The Spectrum'

PREMIERE DATE: July 22

CAST: The four episodes will follow various couples.

RATING: N/A

DESCRIPTION: Originally airing in Australia in 2019, the docuseries will follow couples, both members on the autism spectrum, as they navigate the world of dating and love. It’s been hailed as a breakthrough series, since depictions of neurodiverse people have been few and far between on streaming media. But the series will show that autistic people have the same issues in dating and love as everyone else; they just might handle things differently. We’re guessing the couples will be more successful than the ones on Love Is Blind, that’s for sure.

PREMIERE DATE: July 31

CAST: Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, David Castañeda, Aidan Gallagher, Ethan Hwang, Colm Feore

RATING: TV-14

DESCRIPTION: The superhero students of The Umbrella Academy are back for a second season, and things are in chaos. Vanya has to deal with the fallout of what happened at the end of Season One, and The Handler (Kate Walsh) isn’t around to control them. But, given that this group can time travel, anything can happen — and anyone can pop back up, which is what we’re counting on, given our desire to see more of Mary J. Blige.
