Mindy Kaling’s ‘Never Have I Ever’ Gets Season 2 Renewal at Netflix

In some good news for Mindy Kaling and fans of her teen comedy series, Netflix has renewed Never Have I Ever. The hit high school show will officially be returning to streaming for Season 2, Netflix confirmed today.

Never Have I Ever, which was created by Kaling and Lang Fisher, has been given a second 10-episode season, which will drop at some point next year. To announce the good news, Netflix released a charming short clip of Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan calling her costars on a video chat. While most of them think she’s calling to reveal her new bangs, she finally gets to share her secret: the show’s Season 2 renewal.

When Never Have I Ever premiered in April this year, it was a solid hit for Netflix, landing in the streamer’s Top 10 list of most popular shows and movies. The comedy follows Devi Vishwakumar (Ramakrishnan), a fictionalized version of Kaling’s younger self, as she tries to navigate the world of high school. After a rough freshman year, she’s ready to make 10th grade her redemption time, plotting to lose her virginity and increase her social status.

Never Have I Ever is Ramakrishnan’s first major role — she scored the part in an open casting call with 15,000 other actors.

“I think it’s great that we have a story like Never Have I Ever but it’s depressing that this is happening in 2020 and even though we can applaud breaking stereotypes, we can’t forget that we still have so much work to do,” Ramakrishnan told Deadline in June. “Devi is only one story. Hopefully as much as this show inspires other minorities around the world, it will also inspire directors, producers, creators, writers to start bringing that natural inclusion into their shows.”

The show also stars Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Jaren Lewison, Darren Barnet,  Lee Rodriguez and Ramona Young.
