‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’: CBS All Access Sets August Premiere Date for Animated Comedy

Star Trek: Lower Decks is preparing to go where no one has gone before. CBS All Access has finally set a premiere date for its new Star Trek animated comedy, which centers on the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos, one of Starfleet’s least important ships. Star Trek: Lower Decks will premiere Thursday, August 6 on CBS All Access, with subsequent episodes debuting every Thursday.

Developed by Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites‘ Mike McMahan, Star Trek: Lower Decks follows Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi as they attempt to balance their personal and professional lives aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos in 2380. In true Star Trek fashion, the crew is consistently faced with a variety of different sci-fi anomalies, but as crew members living among the “lower decks,” they can easily shift responsibility for dealing with these crises to their commanding officers.

Like CBS All Access’ other Star Trek series, Lower Deck boasts a host of top talent behind the scenes. Tawny Newsome (Ensign Beckett Mariner), Jack Quaid (Ensign Brad Boimler), Noël Wells (Ensign Tendi), and Eugene Cordero (Ensign Rutherford) voice the four central characters, while Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, and Gillian Vigman voice the Starfleet ship’s bridge crew.

Lower Decks is the first animated series in CBS All Access’ rapidly expanding Star Trek universe. New series Star Trek: Picard and veteran Star Trek: Discovery are both live action, as are forthcoming drama Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, set aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, and Michelle Yeoh’s Section-31 spinoff. However, animation is rapidly approaching the Star Trek Universe: in addition to CBS All Access’ Lower Decks, Nickelodeon is currently developing a CG-animated series geared towards younger viewers.

With the addition of Star Trek: Lower Decks, CBS All Access has become a necessary purchase for franchise diehards. The ViacomCBS-owned streaming service is available for as little as $5.99/month (or a $9.99 commercial free option). If you aren’t ready to commit quite yet, CBS All Access also offers a seven-day free trial for eligible customers.
