‘The Outpost’ Boasts Impressive VOD Premiere Over July 4th Weekend

The Outpost, a newly-released war film based on journalist Jake Tapper’s bestselling 2012 book, topped the VOD charts over 4th of July weekend. The Rod Lurie-directed film claimed the No. 1 spot on iTunes and continues to sit on the top of the chart today, according to Deadline.

To kick off the holiday weekend, The Outpost dropped on VOD and in select theaters on July 3. While the film was originally scheduled for an initial release at South by Southwest Film Festival, the coronavirus pandemic forced the organizers to cancel this year’s festival. The Outpost was subsequently pushed to a split VOD and theatrical release last Friday.

The success of The Outpost prompted a stock surge for Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, which owns Screen Media, the distributor of the film. CSSE called The Outpost‘s premiere “the largest opening day in company history,” in a press release today.

The Outpost stars Scott Eastwood, Orlando Bloom, Caleb Landry Jones, Jack Kesy, Taylor John Smith, Jacob Scipio and Milo Gibson. The film tells the story of troops stationed at Combat Outpost Keating, which was built to engage community members and improve relationships with locals, but was constantly under threat from the Taliban. The approximately 50 soldiers stationed there had to battle 400 Taliban fighters when they descended on the outpost during the Battle of Kamdesh in 2009.
