In the days since the beloved true crime reboot first hit Netflix, viewers have attempted to solve the show’s various mysteries for themselves, and the case of Count Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès, subject of Episode 3, “House of Terror,” is no exception. In all honesty, Reddit users’ commitment to solving the French family Unsolved Mysteries case is incredibly impressive. What theories have these fans come up with in the Dupont de Ligonnès murders? What has Reddit uncovered about Unsolved Mysteries‘ Xavier Dupont episode? Read on to find out!

WHAT ARE THE DUPONT MURDERS? WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FRENCH UNSOLVED MYSTERIES CASE

Unsolved Mysteries Episode 3, “House of Terror,” centers on the grisly murder of a French aristocratic family. In 2011, police discovered the wife and four children of Count Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès buried underneath the porch of the Dupont family home in Nantes, France. When the bodies were found, Xavier, the prominent patriarch, was nowhere to be found, leading investigators to suspect his involvement in the murders. Eventually, French authorities came to believe that Xavier committed the premeditated murders, but he has never been found or charged with the crime.

WHERE IS COUNT XAVIER DUPONT DE LIGONNÈS?

As of now, no one knows the location of Count Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès. Shortly after his wife, Agnes, and children’s bodies were found, Xavier was named a prime suspect, and an international arrest warrant was issued to locate him. Redditers have suggested a few theories about his whereabouts (more on that below), but none have come to fruition.

Nine years after the murders, the mystery of Count Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès disappearance remains unsolved.

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY XAVIER DUPONT DE LIGONNÈS SIGHTINGS?

According to the Mirror, authorities have received more than 900 tips about Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès “sightings” since 2011 (the Mirror’s article was written in 2016, so that figure has likely increased substantially in the years since). The most credible sighting came in 2016, when the fugitive aristocrat was allegedly seen at a casino in Neris-les-Bains, France. Dupont was reportedly seen on CCTV footage withdrawing money from an ATM, but he has not been seen since.

WHAT DOES UNSOLVED MYSTERIES REDDIT THINK ABOUT THE DUPONT DE LIGONNÈS MURDERS?

Reddit users have a variety of different theories about the murders and Xavier Dupont’s disappearance. Many believe that the aristocrat had an accomplice or that he has “people covering his tracks for him” within his wealthy family. Another user who purports to have found a blog post from Dupont de Ligonnès’ family says that the police’s timeline is inaccurate. “Up to nine people saw Agnes (the wife) alive after the date the police says she was killed,” they said.

UNSOLVED MYSTERIES XAVIER REDDIT’S BEST THEORIES

Amid Reddit’s many (many!) theories about the Dupont murders, there seems to be a consensus that Count Xavier is still alive and moving freely around the world. As one user explains, “His body being lost in the sea is certainly plausible and was something most likely considered by the people searching for so long. However, if his body was lost at sea, the things he had, such as a bag and rifle, would not have been. It’s not just that his body was never found, the things he took with him were never found either.”

HAVE OTHER UNSOLVED MYSTERIES ACTUALLY BEEN SOLVED?

Yes! Super sleuths have uncovered the truth behind a series of Unsolved Mysteries  cases, including the disappearance of Craig Williamson, the Anthrax Murder, and the murder of Danny and Kathy Freeman.
