Grant Imahara, ‘Mythbusters’ Host, Dies at 49

MythBusters host Grant Imahara has died at the age of 49. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Imahara died suddenly following a brain aneurysm. In addition to MythBusters, the electrical engineer and roboticist was also known for Netflix’s White Rabbit Project, a docuseries about history’s greatest inventions and heists.

Imahara joined MythBusters in its third season and stayed on as host until 2014, when he left with co-hosts Kari Byron and Tory Belleci. During his time on the Discovery series, the roboticist investigated countless scientific claims, a task that often involved sky diving, driving stunt cars, and building robots, his strong suit.

“We are heartbroken to hear this sad news about Grant,” a Discovery representative said in a statement issued late Monday. “He was an important part of our Discovery family and a really wonderful man. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”

Two years after Imahara left MythBusters, he reunited with Byron and Belleci for Netflix docuseries White Rabbit Project. Each episode of the series saw the former MythBusters team investigate a different scientific or cultural phenomenon, from the science behind jailbreaks to wacky World War II weapons and beyond. Unfortunately, White Rabbit Project was canceled after just one season at Netflix.

In addition to his work on MythBusters and White Rabbit Project, Imahara worked behind the scenes on countless films and television projects. As part of Lucasfilm’s THX and Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) division, the engineer produced animatronics for George Lucas’ Star Wars prequels, The Matrix films, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and more.

In the house since news of Imahara’s death broke, Byron and Belleci have paid homage to their co-host on Twitter and Instagram. “Somedays I wish I had a time machine,” tweeted Byron alongside a photo of her with Imahara and Belleci. “I cannot believe it. I don’t even know what to say,” added Belleci. “My heart is broken. Goodbye buddy.”

Former MythBusters host Adam Savage also honored Imahara on Twitter, writing, “Grant was a truly brilliant engineer, artist and performer, but also just such a generous, easygoing, and gentle PERSON. Working with Grant was so much fun. I’ll miss my friend.”

Rest in peace, Grant Imahara. You will be missed.
