Psych 2: Lassie Come Home

Today marks the official launch of NBC’s Peacock. The new streaming service offers an abundance of classic films, iconic sitcoms, and exciting new content, but one of the most hotly-anticipated offerings is Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.

The sequel follows Shawn and Gus (James Roday Rodriguez and Dulé Hill) as they return to Santa Barbara to help solve the potentially supernatural mystery of who shot Chief Lassiter (Timothy Omundson). Not only is the new Psych movie an enjoyable feel-good offering that fans of the franchise will love, but it maintains the silly, irreverent humor of the original series. The sequel is filled with various pop culture references (Sarah Chalke saying Scrubs, a terrific Richard Schiff/The Good Doctor quip), but there’s one bit that takes the cake: the This Is Us/A Million Little Things joke.

You don’t need psychic powers (real or otherwise) to know that James Roday Rodriguez currently stars on ABC’s A Million Little Things, a show that’s tonally similar to NBC’s popular series This Is Us. Psych 2: Lassie Come Home couldn’t help but have a little fun with the comparisons. Early in the film, Shawn and Gus return to their old office in Santa Barbara to discover that Shawn’s dad has been subletting the space to a slew of “hipster pop ups.” The current pop up is a cat cafe owned by Maisie, a character of inscrutable age portrayed by Rodriguez’s A Million Little Things costar Allison Miller.

Did you really think Psych wouldn’t take the opportunity to throw some good-natured shade at This Is Us? C’mon, son!

Henry: You left behind a slow cooker with a three-pound roast in it. You nearly “This Is Us’d” the entire block!
Shawn: This Is Us? Dad, why are you watching that show? They have the same show on ABC, but newer.
