Sitcoms on Peacock: 5 Classic Shows to Start Streaming

You can’t fault a streaming service for championing their original content at launch. After all, original shows and movies are literally the only thing a new platform can offer that you can’t get anywhere else! In Peacock’s case, those originals include some high-profile dramas, comedies, and docuseries. But while originals like the epically horny Brave New World may grab viewers, platform’s hope that something else entirely will keep viewers around: the library.

When it comes to classic content, Peacock isn’t messing around. Not only does the show have an impressive lineup of current NBCUniversal programs, it also has modern classics like 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation—and it’ll become the exclusive home of The Office next year. On top of that, Peacock is a savior for Cheers fans, since that legendary show just left Netflix last month. The same goes for Frasier, which disappeared from Netflix at the end of 2019.

Those titles are just the beginning! Beyond Cheers, Frasier, 30 Rock, and Parks and Rec, Peacock is home to even more classic sitcoms that either can’t be streamed anywhere else or are making their grand, streaming service debut. If you long for the days of Nick at Nite or the heyday of ’90s sitcoms, there’s plenty for you on Peacock, starting with these five shows.

As the original precocious pre-teen troublemaker, Theodore “the Beaver” Cleaver created a sitcom archetype that persists to this day. This was a revolutionary move for Leave It to Beaver back in 1957; the show was one of the first, if not the first, sitcoms to star a kid as the central, titular character (Dennis the Menace didn’t come along until 1959). The show even changed naturally with the times, with the Beaver and his older brother Wally growing up onscreen through six seasons. Leave It to Beaver’s arrival on streaming is a big deal for those fascinated with the evolution of sitcom history… and also everyone who wants to visit an incredibly fictitious 1950s suburban fantasyland.

'The Munsters'

While The Addams Family has bounced from Hulu to Prime Video to Pluto TV, The Munsters has long been relegated to VOD. Not anymore! Now you can stream the not-quite first family of fright in all their not-quite gory glory. The Munsters is a delightfully kooky artifact of the mid-’60s, an era when sitcoms were populated with witches, genies, martians, and monsters. And even though this series about a family of wholesome monsters living a thoroughly mundane American life in the suburbs only lasted for two seasons, its legacy has endured through a number of movies and revivals. Having The Munsters on Peacock makes July feel a lot like October.

Along with Mr. T and Magnum, the name Punky Brewster immediately conjures up ’80s nostalgia. In fact, Punky Brewster became the go-to nickname for every scrappy, quirky girl in pop culture throughout the ’80s and ’90s—so much so that you tend to forget Punky was an actual character on an actual sitcom! Now you can watch all four seasons of Punky Brewster on Peacock and meet Soleil Moon Frye’s iconic character all over again. BTW—now’s a great time to get into the show, because a revival with Frye and co-star Cherie Johnson is coming to Peacock.

If you knew that Jeff Foxworthy had a short-lived sitcom in the mid-’90s, you might be a fan of “you might be a redneck” jokes. The series gave the megastar comic a TV family that included a pre-Sixth Sense Haley Joel Osment. But even with the massively popular comedian in the lead, The Jeff Foxworthy Show failed to find its footing. It was canceled not once, but twice! Now you can relive both seasons—and both versions—of the show on Peacock.

'Everybody Loves Raymond'

After years in the sitcom vault, the Emmy-winning series is back and ready to binge. Ray Romano stars as a fictional version of himself, dropped smack-dab in the middle of one of the greatest TV families ever assembled. Brad Garrett co-stars as his unlucky brother Robert, and icons Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle play Ray’s scene-stealing parents. We’re not exactly sure how this quintessentially CBS sitcom landed on NBC’s streaming service—but we’re not complaining!
