Alonzo Brooks’ Body Exhumed After ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ Draws Attention to Cold Case

The body of Alonzo Brooks has been exhumed in the wake of Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries episode on the cold case. According to E! News, Brooks’ body was exhumed from the Topeka, Kansas grave on Tuesday as part of the FBI’s ongoing investigation into his mysterious death. Unsolved Mysteries‘ Alonzo Brooks episode, “No Ride Home,” prompted renewed interest in the case, and in the weeks since the episode aired, authorities have received new tips about the 2004 murder.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Kansas City FBI confirmed to E! News that authorities have taken a major step in their investigation into Brooks’ death. “The body of Alonzo Brooks was exhumed today as part of the ongoing investigation,” said the spokesperson.

Another FBI spokesperson told People, “We are looking at this as a suspicious death.”

In April 2004, Brooks, who was 23 at the time, disappeared after attending a party in rural La Cygne, Kansas, about an hour away from his home in Gardner, Kansas. The day after the party, Brooks’ mother reported him missing; after a month-long search, his remains were discovered on May 1, 2004.

Brooks’ remains were found in a wooded area that was repeatedly searched by local authorities, prompting his family to conclude that the body was placed there shortly before they conducted their own search on May 1. However, despite the suspicious circumstances, an autopsy could not determine the cause of Brooks’ death, and the case has remained cold for more than 15 years.

In 2019, the FBI announced that it would reopen Brooks’ case, and in June 2020, they offered a $100,000 reward for information related to his death. “Likely multiple people know what happened that night in April 2004,” U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a statement last month. “It is past time for the truth to come out. The code of silence must be broken. Alonzo’s family deserves to know the truth, and it is time for justice to be served.”
