‘We Can Be Heroes’ Netflix Movie Will Reunite Sharkboy and Lavagirl as Adults

Sharkboy and Lavagirl are ready for their Netflix debut. This week, director Robert Rodriguez revealed that the beloved characters from his 2005 cult classic will make an appearance in his new Netflix movie, We Can Be Heroes. Rodriguez made the big announcement during a Comic-Con@Home directors panel with Jurassic World: Dominion‘s Colin Trevorrow and Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joseph Kosinski, both of whom seemed jazzed about the sequel news (as they should be).

What’s up with the We Can Be Heroes Netflix movie? Will Sharkboy and Lavagirl be in We Can Be Heroes? Here’s everything you need to know.

WILL SHARKBOY AND LAVAGIRL BE IN NETFLIX’S WE CAN BE HEROES?

Yes! In a Comic-Con@Home panel hosted by Collider, Robert Rodriguez confirmed that the characters in his 2005 film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D will make an appearance in Netflix’s new superhero movie.

According to Collider, Rodriguez accidentally let the Sharkboy and Lavagirl news slip a few months ago, saying, “Sharkboy and Lava Girl show up as superhero parents who now have a daughter who has shark and lava powers.” The director later clarified that “the only speaking role is for Lavagirl,” but hey, it’s better than nothing.

WILL TAYLOR DOOLEY AND TAYLOR LAUTNER BE IN SHARKBOY AND LAVAGIRL 2?

Netflix has yet to officially announce that Taylor Dooley and Taylor Lautner will reprise their roles as Lavagirl and Sharkboy, respectively, in the new film, but Rodriguez has provided a few hints about their potential appearance. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the writer and director said that Dooley “looks incredible” and “stepped into her own sequel as Lavagirl.” Rodriguez offered no such hints about Taylor Lautner, but it’s likely that he’ll make a cameo (although not a speaking one), as well.

WHAT ELSE DID ROBERT RODRIGUEZ SAY ABOUT THE SHARKBOY AND LAVAGIRL SEQUEL?

Rodriguez told his fellow directors that it was actually Netflix that approached him about doing another kid-friendly superhero movie. “Netflix came to me because the Spy Kids movies had done just so well on their service,” he revealed. “They said, ‘Could you make a series of films that do that?’ And I said, ‘I’d love to!'”

“My kids are at the age when they can make films alongside me,” he continued. “So we came up with the idea of… like an Avengers team but they all have kids. The kids have powers but they don’t know how to use them because they’re just so young.” Rodriguez added that We Can Be Heroes was “the most challenging movie [he’s] ever done” because he had “eleven superhero kids in every shot,” creating a frantic energy on set.

NEW SHARKBOY AND LAVAGIRL CAST: PRIYANKA CHOPRA, PEDRO PASCAL, AND MORE

In addition to Taylor Dooley and (hopefully) Taylor Lautner, Netflix’s Sharkboy and Lavagirl sequel will feature Priyanka Chopra, Pedro Pascal, Christian Slater, Boyd Holbrook, and Sung Kang. Collider reports that the forthcoming film also stars YaYa Gosselin, Akira Akbar, Andrew Diaz, Andy Walken, Hala Finley, Isaiah Russell-Bailey, Lotus Blossom, Lyon Daniels, Nathan Blair, Vivien Lyra Blair, Adriana Barraza, and Christopher McDonald.

WHAT ELSE DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE WE CAN BE HEROES SHARKBOY AND LAVAGIRL MOVIE?

Here’s even more good news: unlike many Hollywood productions, Rodriguez’s We Can Be Heroes was not affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The director revealed during the Comic-Con@Home panel that he was editing the film when COVID-19 shutdowns began, and he’s currently scoring the movie remotely. The Sharkboy and Lavagirl standalone sequel is currently slated for a 2021 release, but an official date has not yet been set.
