Naya Rivera’s ‘Sugar Rush’ Episode Will Be Her Final TV Appearance

Late actress Naya Rivera‘s final TV appearance will be on Netflix‘s baking competition series, Sugar RushRivera will be featured in a new episode from Season 3 premiering this Friday (July 31), Deadline reports.

The episode, which was the last performance Rivera filmed before the coronavirus shutdown, was taped back in February. The Glee actress serves as a guest judge in the episode, where she appears alongside Sugar Rush host Hunter March and judges and professional chefs Candace Nelson (Cupcake Wars) and Adriano Zumbo.

Sugar Rush, which debuted on Netflix in 2018, is described as a “relentlessly fast-paced competition that challenges bakers to create treats that look beautiful and taste amazing – all against the clock.” Four teams of two compete in a bake-off for a grand prize of $10,000.

Season 3 of Sugar Rush, titled Extra Sweet, got a July 31 premiere date from Netflix last month, but days after the announcement was made, Rivera went missing. On July 8, the actress rented a boat with her 4-year-old son on Lake Piru and never returned. Her son, who was found sleeping on the boat that afternoon, told authorities that his mom went for a swim and never came out of the water. After a days-long search, Rivera’s body was found July 13 and an autopsy ruled that she died from accidental drowning. Rivera was 33. At the time of her death, Rivera was planning to go into production for Season 3 of her YouTube series, Step Up: High Water, but she never filmed any episodes.

After Rivera’s death, Netflix consulted her manager, Gladys Gonzalez, about what to do with the Sugar Rush footage. Gonzalez, who was close with Rivera’s family, decided to go ahead with the footage and release Rivera’s guest judge episode as planned.  When Season 3 of Sugar Rush premieres on Netflix this week, it will open with a dedication honoring Rivera before her episode begins.
