Selena Gomez Will Star in, Executive Produce Hulu’s ‘Only Murders In The Building’

It looks like Selena Gomez is taking over television like she’s taken over Instagram. At the Television Critics Association’s 2020 summer tour, Hulu announced the superstar would be starring and executive producing the streaming service’s upcoming comedy Only Murders In The BuildingComedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short are set to star and produce in the series as well.

Only Murders In The Building won’t just star Steve Martin. The series will be co-created and written by Martin alongside his longtime creative partner John Hoffman. Gomez, Martin, and Short will star as three strangers who are all obsessed with true crime. But when they find themselves in the center of one chaos will ensue. In addition to Martin, Hoffman, and Gomez, Martin Short, This is Us creator Dan Fogelman, and Jess Rosenthal are all set to executive produce the project.

It seems like a promising comedy, especially during a time when everyone is an armchair detective. But Only Murders In The Building’s big achievement will be bringing Gomez back to scripted television. Before the mega-star and singer songwriter was reigning social media, Gomez starred in Disney Channel’s surprisingly great Wizards of Waverly Place as the sassy and headstrong Alex. After the show ended Gomez started to focus more on her musical and film career, starring in movies such as Spring Breakers, Fundamentals of Caring, and The Dead Don’t Die.

This television season will be the first to see Gomez return to the medium as something more than a guest star. Gomez is set to star in HBO Max’s cooking reality show Selena + Chef, which will see the celebrity try to create ambitious dishes in quarantine with the help of a professional chef. The series is set to premiere on August 13. Gomez has also tried her hand at producing in recent years, executive producing the wildly successful 13 Reasons Why as well as Netflix’s docuseries Living Undocumented.

That makes three streaming services that Gomez has infiltrated. But Only Murders In The Building will mark the first time in years that Gomez has returned to star in scripted television. With co-stars like Martin Short and Steve Martin, coming back for this project seems like a pretty great bet.
