After months of watching our favorite late night hosts deliver monologues from their basements, we’re slowly seeing them return to their natural environments on stage. Both Stephen Colbert and James Corden announced that they’ll be transitioning back to filming in-studio, the Hollywood Reporter reports.
The CBS hosts have been filming their shows, The Late Show and The Late Late Show, from home since March, but will head back to the studio starting next week. Corden is set to return to his Television City stage in Los Angeles, where he’ll create the show from a redesigned set that meets coronavirus safety protocols.
Colbert, who typically films at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York, has not revealed his new location, but he told viewers on his July 24 show that he will not be returning to the theater. “I also won’t be sleeping where I work,” he said.
The Late Late Show Twitter account shared images of Corden’s newly designed stage, writing, “After lots of careful planning and an overhaul of our studio to ensure the safety of our staff and crew, we’re thrilled to announce that we’re back this Monday night with all-new episodes of the #LateLateShow!”
Late Late Show executive producers Ben Winston and Rob Crabbe issued their own statement about the show’s return to the studio, emphasizing the importance of staying safe while filming. Both The Late Late Show and The Late Show will film without audiences, and guest interviews will continue to take place over video and not in the studio.
“We are so excited to be back in our new look set on studio 56 at Television City and cannot wait to be making new shows staring Monday,” Winston and Crabbe said. “There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our team, so seeing our crew safely back together again has been worth all the work and planning to get us to this point.”
Colbert and Corden join two other late night hosts who recently transitioned back to the studio. Both Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon took their shows back to filming as usual last month, with O’Brien returning to L.A. to tape Conan and Fallon heading back to New York for The Tonight Show.
