Amber Ruffin and Larry Wilmore Will Host Peacock’s Late Night Talk Block

Late night comedy is about to welcome two familiar faces. At the Television Critics Association’s 2020 summer tour Peacock announced that it will be premiering not one, but two new late night comedy shows. The first, The Amber Ruffin Show, will be hosted by the Last Night with Seth Meyers writer and regular. The second show doesn’t yet have a title but will be hosted by the creator of The Bernie Mac Show and The Daily Show‘s former “Senior Black Correspondent,” Larry Wilmore.

The Amber Ruffin Show is being billed as “a topical late-night show with just the good parts — the comedy.” The weekly series will be a half-hour and will tackle everything from news to evening gowns. Peacock has announced nine episodes of the show so far, the first episode of which is set to premiere in September.

“Having a late-night show on Peacock is so exciting!” said Ruffin in a press release. “We can’t wait to write sketches, songs and jokes about this terrible time we call now!”

Ruffin is best known for her work on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers. She has also written and starred in Comedy Central’s Detroiters, is a regular narrator for the network’s Drunk History, has written for HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, and was a writer and performer for both 2018 and 2019’s Golden Globes. Basically Ruffin is an excellent comedian who has been on the rise for a while. It’s about time for her to get a few shows of her own. The series will be produced by Universal Television as well as Sethmaker Shoemeyers Productions.

But that’s not the only late-night addition Peacock has up its feathered sleeve. The streaming service has also ordered 11 episodes of a yet untitled late-night show from Larry Wilmore. The series will be more interview heavy than Ruffin’s talkshow as it will follow the comedian having “real discussions with high profile people from all different backgrounds including sports, politics and entertainment.” Each episode will cover the election while also striving to be funny, honest, and possibly awkward. Wilmore will serve as an executive producer of the series in addition to Jo Miller, Tony Hernandez, Brooke Posch, David Miner, and Michael Rotenberg. The talk show will be produced by Universal Television and Jax Media.

“I’m honored to have the chance to not only be back on television but to partner with the great team at Peacock,” said Wilmore. “Apparently there’s a lot going on in the world right now and a big election happening soon, so I’m happy to have a place in the conversation.”
