MacGruber
MacGruber is finally getting his very own TV show. Peacock announced today that MacGruber, one of the earliest hyped possible series for the service, has gotten an official greenlight. Will Forte will star, write, and executive produce the series, which is a spin-off of the 2010 cult classic comedy film of the same name. In even better news, the series will have the same creative team behind the camera.
The first season of the MacGruber series will feature eight half-hour episodes and will take place after the events of the MacGruber film. According to a Peacock press release: “After rotting in prison for over a decade, America’s ultimate hero and uber patriot MacGruber (Will Forte) is finally released. His mission: to take down a mysterious villain from his past—Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth. With the entire world in the crosshairs, MacGruber must race against time to defeat the forces of evil – only to find that evil… may be lurking within.”
In addition to star, writer, and executive producer Will Forte, MacGruber writer John Solomon is back as well as director Jorma Taccone. The series will also be executive produced by Lorne Michaels, John Goldwyn, Andrew Singer and Erin David. Star and creator Will Forte has been vocal in years past about wanting to reunite the MacGruber creative team for a spin-off series and it seems with today’s order, he’s got his wish.
MacGruber started off as a recurring sketch on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Then cast member Will Forte played the character of MacGruber, who was a satiric riff on the can-do heroes of ’80s TV, in particular MacGyver. In each sketch, MacGruber would be pressed to diffuse a bomb, but he would get distracted. The 2010 film expanded the character’s backstory, something sure to continue in the upcoming Peacock series.
