Sara Bareilles to Star as a Former ‘90s Pop Star in Tina Fey’s ‘Girls5eva’ for Peacock

Grammy winner Sara Bareilles is set to star in the brand new Tina Fey-produced sitcom Girls5eva for Peacock. The series will follow the members of a short-lived ’90s girl group who find a second shot at pop star glory when a young rap star samples their one hit. Bareilles will the lead the series,  executive produced by Fey and her 30 Rock/Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt partner Robert Carlock. The announcement came during Peacock’s virtual presentation for TCA members and confirms the new streamer’s push into original comedy.

Created by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alum Meredith Scardino, Girls5eva will star singer-songwriter Bareilles as Dawn, one of the former members of “the short-lived 90s girl group Girls5eva.” According to Peacock, Dawn “is now a bit restless in life managing her family’s small Italian restaurant in Queens. When the opportunity arises, Dawn reluctantly gets the band back together for a Girls5eva reunion and it might just be exactly what she needed.” The series will follow the now-grown members of Girls5eva as they try to balance their creative ambitions with the mundane realities of everyday adult life.

“It is a pinch me moment to get to cross paths creatively with women like Meredith Scardino and Tina Fey, who I have been a fan of forever,” Bareilles said in a Peacock press announcement. “I am a longtime admirer of so many of the characters they have brought to life in other projects, and I am already in love with the women at the center of Girls5eva. I am so excited to help bring to life what I know will be a smart, creative, hilarious show with a lot of heart.”

Sara Bareilles shot to fame in 2007 with her breakout single, “Love Song” off of debut album Little Voice. More recently, Bareilles has received acclaim for writing and starring in the Tony-nominated Broadway musical Waitress. Bareilles is also currently the executive producer of the Apple TV+ series Little Voice, which is loosely based on her own life.

It was also announced today that Peacock has ordered MacGruber to series and that both Amber Ruffin and Larry Wilmore will lead the streamer’s late night bloc.
