‘Harriet The Spy’ Animated Series Starring Beanie Feldstein and Jane Lynch to Debut on Apple TV+

After inspiring a generation of young readers in the 1960s and capturing a new audience decades later through film, Louise Fitzhugh’s “Harriet The Spy” novel is getting its very own TV series, Apple announced today. An animated version of Harriet The Spy is headed for Apple TV+, and it’s already got some major names attached to it.

Booksmart‘s Beanie Feldstein is set to play titular character Harriet, while Glee‘s Jane Lynch will voice her nanny, Ole Golly. Mean Girls actress Lacey Chabert has signed on to play queen bee Marion Hawthorne, Harriet’s classmate.

Like the original 1964 book, Harriet The Spy is set in 1960s New York, where 11-year-old Harriet has big hopes of becoming a writer one day. The adventurous and independent girl knows she needs to get the scoop and learn everything she can to be a successful writer, so to learn more, she decides to become a spy first.

The upcoming Apple TV+ series comes from writer and executive producer Will McRobb, who was a co-creator on Nickelodeon’s classic series The Adventures of Pete & Pete. The Jim Henson Company’s Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford will also executive produce alongside John W. Hyde and Terissa Kelston and Wendy Moss-Klein and Nancy Steingard. Producer Sidney Clifton is also attatched to the project, and Titmouse Animation Studios will animate the new series.

“Harriet The Spy” first got the big-screen adaptation in 1996 with the Harriet The Spy movie. Michelle Trachtenberg starred as Harriet, while Rosie O’Donnell played Ole Golly and Charlotte Sullivan starred as Marion Hawthorne. In 2010, Disney Channel aired another remake of the Harriet The Spy film, titled Harriet The Spy: Blog Wars, which re-imagined Harriet as a modern day high schooler.
