Woman Crush Wednesday: Dominique Fishback is a ‘Power’ House

Here we are, already almost halfway through August! Finding it hard to keep track of time? Same here. Luckily, all we really have to remember is one special day a week where we recognize the talented women from our favorite movies and shows and show them the recognition they more than deserve.

That’s right, it’s time for yet another Woman Crush Wednesday, and today we’re celebrating a wonderful young woman who has steadily gained notoriety and an impressive filmography over the past decade. So, if you didn’t know her name before, make sure you pay attention now and don’t forget it; Without further ado, give it up fo this week’s WCW, the delightful Dominique Fishback!

WHO’S THAT GAL: Dominique Fishback

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING:
Fishback stars alongside Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the brand new Netflix Original superhero film Project Power, which is set to be released on the platform this Friday, August 14th. The film centers around a teenage dealer (Fishback) and a local cop (Gordon-Levitt) who must team with an ex-soldier (Foxx) to take down the group responsible for creating a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes and which has recently hit the streets of New Orleans.

The film is already generating plenty of buzz ahead of its impending release: Last month, IndieWire dubbed Project Power Netflix’s “summer tentpole” for this year, and just this past week, TV Insider described the film as a “high-caliber thriller.” One of the most exciting things about Project Power, however, is Fishback’s incredible performance. Foxx recently told ET Canada that, not only did he learn from her while shooting the film, but also that his young co-star will “be on stage saying ‘Thank you members, thank you Academy,’ because she blows everybody away in this movie” (and the man has won an Oscar, Golden Globe, and Grammy, so it’s safe to say he knows what he’s talking about). So, do yourselves a favor and see Fishback’s award-worthy performance in Project Power as soon as the movie drops!

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Fishback began her professional on-screen in 2013, appearing in an episode of Cinemax drama series The Knick, and then from there, had a quick and steady succession of television roles throughout the following years: an episode of Showtime drama series The Affair in 2014, an episode of Emmy-winning FX period spy thriller series The Americans in 2015, and an episode of CBS police procedural drama series Blue Bloods in 2015, before even larger, recurring roles started coming her way. Fishback played Elan in two episodes of USA comedy-drama Royal Pains, and then had a four episode recurring role as Billie Rowan in HBO Original drama/history miniseries Show Me a Hero, both in 2015, before landing her starring role as Darlene in HBO drama series The Deuce, which she was on from 2017 to 2019. Fishback also played Najja in four episodes of HBO late-night sketch comedy series Random Acts of Flyness in 2018.

2018 also marked Fishback’s feature film debut, by starring as Angel Lamere in drama film Night Comes On, as well as playing Kenya in drama film The Hate U Give. Clearly, Fishback’s career and credit list has only grown over time, so we can be sure to see countless incredible performances coming from her on screens big and small for many years to come.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: Luckily, you don’t have to wait too much longer to see more of Fishback. The actress will play Deborah Johnson in 2021 biographical drama film Judas and the Black Messiash, which retells the story of of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), Chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, and his fateful betrayal by FBI informant William O’Neal (LaKeith Stanfield). You can also keep up to date with Fishback by following her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
