We’re back at it again with another Woman Crush Wednesday to spice up your summer, and this week we’re celebrating another wonderful woman who has thrived as a comedian, actress, and writer for the past decade. If you haven’t heard of this New Zealand native, then please, get with it and check her out, because she is absolutely hilarious and no doubt will be taking over the world’s comedy scene before you know it. We’re falling hard for her and you should be too; Give it up for this week’s WCW, the talented Rose Matafeo!
WHO’S THAT GAL: Rose Matafeo
WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Matafeo’s stand-up comedy special Rose Matafeo: Horndog is hitting HBO Max on Thursday, August 20, and is an absolute must-see. Matafeo has kissed nearly 10 men in her life, AKA she’s a total horndog. In her special, Matafeo strives to discover the essence of horniness in an hour full of stand-up, sketch and mid-20s angst.
The comedian’s special has received plenty of critical acclaim and awards, most notably winning her the prize for Best Show at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s comedy awards in 2018, as well as heaps of praise: The Guardian dubbed Horndog a piece of “effervescent comedy from this star in the making,” The Theatre Times described the show as an “invigoratingly enjoyable performance in which every moment has been precisely calculated for laugh,” and many more reviews singing Matafeo’s praises. As someone who wanted to see Matafeo at last year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival but couldn’t because her shows were sold out, I implore you to do yourselves a favor and check this show out as soon as it drops.
WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Matafeo’s on-screen debut was a stand-up appearance in 2011 on television series U Live, and from there, she saw plenty of action on screen as both herself and in various roles over the next decade. She has had roles in television series like comedy Auckland Daze from 2013 to 2014, comedies Climaxed and W1A in 2017, sketch comedy series Funny Girls (for which she also wrote an episode) from 2015 to 2018, comedy mini-series Temp (which she also wrote) in 2018, and comedy/drama/romance Squinters from 2018 to 2019, and also directed five episodes of comedy series Golden Boy.
Matafeo’s film debut was in 2018 comedy The Breaker Upperers. The comedian also has tons of credits to her name on hit panel/game shows like Taskmaster, Richard Osman’s House of Games, and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, as well as on talk shows like The Russell Howard Hour, The Jonathan Ross Show, and Conan, and even hits like Roast Battle, Love Island: Aftersun, and The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice. Matafeo has a long and exciting career ahead of her so make sure you keep an eye out for her great work for the years to come!
WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: Hooked on Matafeo and craving some more? Well, you’re in luck, because she’s got a movie on the way! Matafeo stars alongside Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom of Harry Potter fame) in comedy Baby Done, in which wannabe-adventurer Zoe (Matafeo) freaks out when she falls pregnant to her long-term boyfriend Tim (Lewis); As Tim embraces the prospect of fatherhood, Zoe attempts to rush through her dreams. She also has a six part BBC sitcom, which she both writes and stars in, on the way. Starstruck (which had its filming was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak) is about a twenty-something juggling two dead-end jobs in London whilst navigating the awkward consequences of accidentally sleeping with a film star.
