Netflix’s ‘Enola Holmes’ Poster Features a Glaring Historical Inaccuracy

If you’re going to set a film in the 19th century, you should probably double check that the buildings on your poster actually existed during that time. This week, Netflix released the official poster and teaser for Enola Holmes, a Sherlock Holmes spinoff starring Millie Bobby Brown. The film is set in 1884, but eagle-eyed fans noticed that the Enola Holmes poster inexplicably includes an image of London’s Portcullis House, a government building that was finished in… 2001. Talk about a marketing fail.

Enola Holmes‘ Portcullis House debacle is one of many things that has Sherlock fans talking this week. What is Portcullis House? When is Enola Holmes coming to Netflix? Here’s everything you need to know about this star-studded movie!

ENOLA HOLMES: WHAT’S WITH THAT PORTCULLIS HOUSE MISTAKE?

On Monday, Netflix released the first marketing materials for Enola Holmes, Millie Bobby Brown’s take on the beloved novel franchise. The series, set in the late 19th century, follows 16-year-old Enola Holmes as she attempts to solve her mother’s (Helena Bonham Carter) shocking disappearance with little help from brothers Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin).

According to Netflix’s official description, Enola Holmes is set in 1884, and yet, the poster seems to have forgotten that fact. Shortly after the teaser and poster were released, Twitter users pointed out that the Enola Holmes poster includes an image of Portcullis House, an office building in Westminster, London. Portcullis House was commissioned in 1992, more than 100 years after the Netflix film takes place, and completed in 2001, so it doesn’t make a ton of sense that it was included alongside London landmarks like Big Ben and the Hall of Parliament.
