‘2 Dope Queens’ Phoebe Robinson Sets First Solo Stand-Up Special at HBO Max

After years spent cracking jokes behind a microphone with her 2 Dope Queens co-star Jessica Williams, comedy queen Phoebe Robinson has officially landed a solo stand-up special. HBO Max has greenlit the star’s comedy special, which marks her first television stand-up event.

Robinson’s currently untitled special will clock in at an hour long, and it sounds like it’s packed with timely jokes from the comedian’s signature brand of humor. According to HBO, Robinson plans to cover “quarantining with her boyfriend, moderating on Michelle Obama’s book tour, and failing at being a social justice warrior” in her new special.

“I feel like Susan Lucci when she finally won a Daytime Emmy® (this reference is for my mom),” Robinson said in a statement today. “It took twelve years to get here, but here I am. Starting my relationship with HBO via 2 Dope Queens was a dream come true and to be able to stay in the HBO family with this stand-up special is helping me keep my lights on and Tampax Pearls in my medicine cabinet. Jokes aside, i’m honored to have the privilege of making people laugh, especially during these times. Thank you in advance for giving me the job of a lifetime.”

Suzanna Makkos, executive vice president of original comedy and animation for HBO Max, added, “Phoebe’s unique brand of humor is exciting and fresh and we are proud to welcome her to the Max family. A true multi-hyphenate, she radiates with authenticity and has her finger on the pulse of what’s happening in the world today.”

Over the course of her comedy career, Robinson has worked on shows like Comedy Central’s Broad City and MTV’s Girl Codebut she got her big break with the 2 Dope Queens podcast, which she launched in 2016 with Williams. The popular podcast was later turned into an HBO series of the same name, which has aired two full seasons since 2018.

Along with Robinson’s special, HBO announced a few more stand-up events in the works. The network is also developing a socially distant summer stand-up routine from Colin Quinn and a solo special from Aida Rodriguez.
