ThunderCats, ho! Today, Hulu added the iconic 1980s ThunderCats series, as well as its 2011 revival. The animated classic has only been on Hulu for a few hours, but viewers are already flocking to the show, and many have taken to Twitter to praise the throwback. As one particularly excited fan put it, “Time to buy Hulu!” It’s always a good time to buy Hulu, but sure.
Created by writer Tobin “Ted” Wolf, the original ThunderCats series aired from 1985 to 1989 and immediately proved immensely popular with fans. The original animated series, as well as the franchise it spawned, centers on a group of cat-like humanoid aliens on the planet of Thundera who face constant attacks from their enemies, the Mutants of Plun-Darr. Over the course of four seasons, the ThunderCats engage in countless battles with the Mutants and eventually travel to Third Earth, where they establish their new home base.
Wolf’s ThunderCats series inspired a series of comic books (some produced by Marvel, others by DC Comics’ Wildstorm), a video game, merchandise, and in 2011, a revival series. The reboot ran for 26 episodes, but was canceled after just one season on Cartoon Network.
Hulu’s ThunderCats acquisition came as a surprise to many fans, but they were quick to embrace the news. “Hulu just one big time with ThunderCats!!!!” tweeted one fan. “80s babies. ThunderCats is on Hulu!! This is not a drill!!!!” said another.
Others praised the resurgence of classic animated content on streaming. “Just like how they brought [Avatar the Last Airbender] and Korra to Netflix they’re bringing ThunderCats (OG) and ThunderCats (2011) to Hulu,” wrote one fan. “Y’all better show some love to one of my ALL TIME FAV series just like how you did with ATLA.” Said another of the ThunderCats Hulu debut, “Hopefully having a bigger audience will give it the Avatar effect.”
The original ThunderCats and the 2011 revival series are now streaming on Hulu. Enjoy!
