Though the future of DC Universe series Titans has had a few speed-bumps thrown in its path, we do know where the heroes are heading in Season 3: Gotham City, where they’ll meet some classic Batman associates and villains, and at least one team member will get a comic faithful upgrade.
As revealed at the series’ DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes panel tonight, Jason Todd (Curran Walters) will be upgrading from a Robin costume, to Red Hood. After breaking with his former teammates at the end of Season 2, Todd “dons a new identity in his obsession to take down his old team,” which fits both the TV version of Todd, as well as the comics version. True to the Titans ethos, Red Hood is an extreme hero who packs two guns and doesn’t hesitate to use them.
Two other figures yet to be cast will be joining the show, as well: Barbara Gordon; and Dr. Jonathan Crane. Gordon on Titans is the former Batgirl, now Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department. Like in the comics, she previously had a relationship with Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites), but isn’t that happy with the angsty heroes taking up residence in Gotham. And Crane, better known as Scarecrow, helps her out as a profiler and consultant, despite being locked up in Arkham Asylum.
Titans was the first DC Universe original series… And potentially may be the last, as well. Initially picked up for a third season in November, 2019, Titans was meant to go into production to air this Fall or Winter. Instead, COVID-19 hit, and the series will now potentially aim to film later this year, for a 2021 debut. And by that point, there may no longer be a DC Universe. Or rather, original content may not air there, meaning the service will look very different going forward.
“The original content that is on DCU is migrating to HBO Max,” DC Comics Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee said in an interview with THR last week (August 14). “Truthfully, that’s the best platform for that content. The amount of content you get, not just DC, but generally from WarnerMedia, is huge and it’s the best value proposition, if I’m allowed to use that marketing term. We feel that is the place for that.”
That said, no specific details or timeline were placed on the migration. DC’s Stargirl has already been picked up as exclusive to The CW for Season 2, while Doom Patrol has been airing its second season simultaneously on DC Universe and HBO Max, and Harley Quinn is currently streaming on HBO Max, as well, after concluding its second season on DC Universe. Harley Quinn also aired episodes in syndication on SYFY. The lone remaining original, Young Justice, has yet to make any moves from the DC Comics focused service.
All that is a long way of saying that Titans Season 3 is happening, the team will be coming back to tussle with some baddies, and probably a disapproving Bruce Wayne (Iain Glen). Titans also stars Anna Diop as Kori’ander/Starfire, Teagan Croft as Rachel/Raven, Ryan Potter as Garfield Logan/Beast Boy, Conor Leslie as Donna Troy/Wonder Girl, Minka Kelly as Dawn Granger/Dove, Alan Ritchson as Hank Hall/Hawk and more. We just don’t know when — or where — it’ll be airing.
