‘Black Adam’ Publicity Inspires Kid Cudi To Request Black Superhero Without “Black” In Their Name

Over the weekend at DC FanDome, there was a lot of talk about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s upcoming movie, Black Adam, after the actor and former professional wrestler debuted his costume for the character and the panel gave a first glimpse of the film.

The announcement inspired rapper Kid Cudi to speak out via Twitter, requesting a black superhero without the word “black” in their name.

Thus far, some comic book characters that have been labeled by the color of their skin include Black Lightning, Black Panther, Blackmanta and now Black Adam.

As many of us were, Cudi was shaken by the killing of George Floyd, which ignited the Black Lives Matter movement. Eminem and Cudi teamed up for the very first time on a song titled “The Adventures of Moon Man & Slim Shady,” which was released last month in tribute to the slain African-American man at the knee of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

As with any statement nowadays, Cudi’s tweet faced backlash from Twitter users who were eager to point out all of the superheroes that have been portrayed by people of color and don’t have the word “black” in their name. This seems like a deflection tactic by comic book fans who may be naive to Cudi’s larger point.
