Keanu Reeves Says Bill and Ted Are Not Stoners: “They Have a Nice Outlook”

Ahead of the premiere of Bill & Ted Face The Music, franchise star Keanu Reeves would like to set the record straight about the iconic Bill & Ted duo. You know, the stoner guys who travel through time — but if you ask Reeves, we’ve been getting it all wrong since the start.  Despite what audiences may have believed for decades, Reeves insists that his character Ted Theodore Logan and Alex Winter‘s Bill S. Preston Esquire are not really the stoner bros we’ve come to know and love.

In an interview with AP Entertainment yesterday, Reeves insisted that Bill and Ted are keeping it clean, and that their dialogue and outlook are just part of their personalities, not a result of lighting up. “I’d like to get one thing straight. Bill and Ted are not stoners,” Reeves told AP Entertainment.  “You know, they have a nice outlook. They like people, their friendship.”

Sure, between the two of them there are plenty of “whoa’s” and many “dude’s” in their dialogue, and their characters are plenty laid back, but Reeves does have a point. In both Bill & Ted’s Most Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journeynot once do we see Bill or Ted reach for a joint or light up a pipe — but keep in mind, the films are both rated PG.  Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from linking Bill and Ted with other famous stoner duos, like Cheech and Chong, Harold and Kumar or The Big Lebowski‘s Walter and The Dude.

Reeves’ Bill & Ted admission comes just days before the third franchise film, Bill & Ted Face The Music, is released in theaters and on VOD later this week. The upcoming film follows Bill and Ted as adults who now have families of their own and are living mundane daily lives. But everything changes when they get a visitor from the future who reveals that their hit song could save the world and fulfill their destinies.
