‘Million Dollar Beach House’ Slammed for “Racist Vibes” by Netflix Viewers

Million Dollar Beach House may have jumped into the Top 10 list in its first day on Netflix, but viewers aren’t taking too kindly to the reality show. In just 24 hours, the Hamptons-set series went viral for its “racist vibes,” and many Twitter users have chimed in to share their disappointment with the Selling Sunset knockoff. As one viewer succinctly put it, “Million Dollar Beach House is fucking gross. Racist asf.” Doesn’t get much clearer than that!

Like Selling Sunset before it, Million Dollar Beach House follows a group of real estate agents in the Hamptons as they attempt to sell beautiful, beachfront properties to wealthy buyers. The group, from the Nest Seekers brokerage, includes new agents J.B. and Noel and veteran agents Peggy, Jimmy, and Michael, all of whom bring their own level of ego and drama to the show.

Other than Noel, a Black man, Netflix’s Million Dollar Beach House cast is entirely white, and in the first episode alone, the group’s lack of diversity makes for a cringe-worthy watch. When they first meet Noel, the white, bro-y real estate dudes are confounded about how to pronounce his name, despite the fact that “Noel” is an incredibly common name. “Was Now-el here today? No-el, whatever the fuck?” says Michael in a confessional. “You guys meet him yet? He’s very polished, right? A polished gentleman.”

Viewers were quick to point out the many “microaggressions” in the first episode alone, and they slammed the reality show’s “racist vibes” on Twitter. “Ugh, Million Dollar Beach House on Netflix reeks of racist vibes and white ‘do you know who I am’ privilege,” wrote one viewer. “Million Dollar Beach House is racist y’all. Netflix like really?” said another. “Million Dollar Beach House is terrible,” added another. “I wanted Selling Sunset type vibes and got micro aggressions and subtle racist vibes.”

Will Netflix listen to viewers’ criticisms and cancel the series after one season? If there was ever a time to do so, it’s now.

Million Dollar Beach House is now streaming on Netflix.
