Stephen Colbert is Boycotting the RNC: “It Doesn’t Reflect Our Reality”

Stephen Colbert may be going live after the Republican National Convention this week, but he’s done watching it. Last night, The Late Show host revealed that he’s boycotting the 2020 RNC, as the GOP’s speakers and message “doesn’t reflect our reality.” Added Colbert, “Donald Trump does not care if you live or die of COVID, or racism, as long as he wins.”

While Colbert’s job (particularly this week) may be to riff on the RNC, he admitted that he failed to live up to that responsibility on Wednesday. “Now, full disclosure: I did not much of the convention tonight,” he said at the top of last night’s broadcast. “And fullest disclosure: I did not watch any of it.”

“Because right now in America, we’re facing a global pandemic that has killed 180,000 Americans, heavily armed Rambo wannabes are murdering people in our streets, the strongest hurricane in the history of the Gulf Coast is making landfall as I speak, and the RNC’s message is, ‘Who’s up for four more years?'” said the late night host.

“I know by not watching the RNC I didn’t do my job tonight. And I just want to say: I feel great about it,” he added with a smile. “Why should we pay attention to what they’re saying if none of what they’re saying tonight is about what’s happening in America right now? Why should we watch their reality show if it doesn’t reflect our reality? Why subject ourselves to their lies that stick to your soul like hot tar? Lies like: Donald Trump cares whether you live or die.”

By way of example, The Late Show host mentioned new CDC guidelines stating that asymptomatic people may not need to be tested for COVID-19. “That is surprising, because we have been repeatedly warned that 40 percent of infections are asymptomatic, and 50 percent of transmissions occur before the symptoms. Ignoring something doesn’t make it go away,” said Colbert. “If it did, why are there still Valpak coupons? Who on Earth thinks not testing is a good idea?”

Colbert continued to riff on Trump’s COVID-19 response before turning his attention to another major news story: Kenosha, Wisconsin police shooting Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man, seven times in the back. The host played a clip from Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers, who addressed his team’s decision to strike during the NBA playoffs. “You hear Donald Trump and all of them talking about ‘fear,'” said Rivers on Wednesday. “We’re the ones getting killed. We’re the ones getting shot.”

“That is why voting in November is so important,” concluded Colbert, adding that Trump only cares about reelection, not American lives. “Until we the people change this administration, we will continue to get more leadership from the NBA than the RNC.”
