Broadway Co-stars Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto and More Reunite for ‘The Boys in the Band’ Trailer

Ryan Murphy is certainly keeping busy. While we’re all eagerly waiting for Ratched to drop in a couple of weeks, we just got a taste of another project he’s had in the works for a while that’s set to premiere on Netflix later this month. The official trailer for The Boys in the Band, the film adaptation of the hit Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, was just released this morning, and it’s packed with big names and plenty of talent.

The Boys in the Band reunites the actors from the original Broadway play, bringing together again Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Tuc Watkins, Andrew Rannells, Matt Bomer, Michael Benjamin Washington and Robin de Jesús to tell their story on the small screen. The film follows a group of gay men in 1968 New York City who come together one evening for a birthday party, which begins as a celebratory, light affair, but takes a turn when a figure from the host’s past shows up.

Screenwriter Michael (Parsons) hosts the birthday celebration, which he organizes to honor Harold (Quinto). Here’s who’s on the guest list, courtesy of Netflix: “Donald (Bomer), Michael’s former flame, now mired in self-analysis; Larry (Rannells), a randy commercial artist living with Hank (Watkins), a school teacher who has just left his wife; Bernard (Washington), a librarian tiptoeing around fraught codes of friendship alongside Emory (de Jesús), a decorator who never holds back; and a guileless hustler (Charlie Carver), hired to be Harold’s gift for the night.”

Today’s trailer shows everyone getting along fine and well until there’s a major shift in the evening, thanks to the arrival of Alan (Brian Hutchison), Michael’s old college roommate. “Each man is challenged to confront long-buried truths that threaten the foundation of the group’s tight bond,” reads the film’s official synopsis.

Before landing a Netflix adaptation, the play premiered on Broadway in 2018. But its original debut came decades earlier in 1968, with the first The Boys in the Band run on Broadway, which also got a film adaptation. For his Netflix project, Murphy collaborated with filmmaker Joe Mantello, who directed the film based on Mart Crowley’s play.

The Boys in the Band premieres on Netflix Sept. 30. Watch the full trailer in the video above.
