Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ Is a Staggering, Horny, Delirious Achievement
Francis Ford Coppola‘s final Godfather film is about to get an overhaul. Paramount revealed today that 30 years after the original debuted in theaters, we’re getting a new version of The Godfather III, complete with a different title, new edit and new release in theaters this December.
The new cut, titled, Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, “achieves director-screenwriter Coppola and screenwriter [Mario] Puzo’s original vision for the finale, which has been meticulously restored for the finest presentation of the Corleone saga’s last chapter,” Paramount stated in a press release today. The new cut will get a VOD release shortly after it comes to theaters this winter. Viewers can expect to see a film very different from the one they remember, because it sounds like Coppola has some serious edits planned.
“Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is an acknowledgement of Mario’s and my preferred title and our original intentions for what became The Godfather: Part III,” Coppola said in a press release today. “For this version of the finale, I created a new beginning and ending, and rearranged some scenes, shots, and music cues. With these changes and the restored footage and sound, to me, it is a more appropriate conclusion to The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II and I’m thankful to Jim Gianopulos and Paramount for allowing me to revisit it.”
The new cut is welcome news for The Godfather III, which is remembered as the lowest-rated film in the franchise after the success of the first two. The third and final Godfather movie follows the end of Michael Corleone’s time at the head of the Corleone family mafia, and stars Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Andy García, Eli Wallach, Joe Mantegna, Bridget Fonda, George Hamilton, and Sofia Coppola, the director’s daughter.
Paramount hasn’t announced official dates yet for the Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone release, but keep checking back because we’ll be sure to update you when they’re available.
