Among his legendary roles as T’Challa in Black Panther and Jackie Robinson in 42, Chadwick Boseman also played “Get Up Offa That Thing” singer James Brown in Get on Up. The actor tragically passed last week after a battle with colon cancer.
Get on Up is directed by Tate Taylor, who also helmed The Help and Ma. The biopic follows Brown’s stream of consciousness — Boseman often breaks the fourth wall to express the singer’s emotions. It’s told in non-linear fashion, jumping around to the pits and peaks in Brown’s music career. The cast of Get on Up was nominated for an ensemble award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards of 2015, and Boseman was nominated for his acting performance at the Black Reel Awards and NAACP’s Image Awards.
