Good news for DC’s weirdest superheroes: In advance of the show’s panel at today’s DC FanDome: Explore the Multiverse event, Doom Patrol has been picked up for Season 3, and this time it will be streaming exclusively on HBO Max as a Max Original.

“On behalf of the wonderful cast, writers and crew, we are thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to return to Doom Manor,” said Doom Patrol EP Jeremy Carver in a release provided to Decider. “And we are especially thankful for our partners at Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, DC UNIVERSE and, of course, HBO Max.”

Added Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max: “Doom Patrol came to HBO Max with an already deep and passionate fan base and has risen to the top as one of the most watched Max Originals on the platform. The series sits well in our portfolio and we are glad to greenlight a third season to continue this distinctive style of storytelling that resonates so well with critics and fans alike.”

Doom Patrol moving from the DC Universe streaming service, to HBO Max isn’t all that surprising, given quotes last month from DC Comics Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee said in an interview with THR on August 14. “The original content that is on DCU is migrating to HBO Max. Truthfully, that’s the best platform for that content. The amount of content you get, not just DC, but generally from WarnerMedia, is huge and it’s the best value proposition, if I’m allowed to use that marketing term. We feel that is the place for that.”

However, up until now it wasn’t entirely clear what content he was talking about. DC’s Stargirl, which aired its first season on The CW and DC Universe is moving to The CW exclusively for Season 2Harley Quinn, the animated series that recently started streaming on HBO Max, has yet to be picked up for Season 3. That left Titans, which has been picked up for Season 3 already, albeit at DC Universe, and Doom Patrol. Now, at least, we know one of the shows that will be heading to The Max (as us cool dudes call it), and it couldn’t have happened to a better show.

Doom Patrol, based on the comic books of the same name, features Cliff Steele aka Robotman (Brendan Fraser), Larry Trainor aka Negative Man (Matt Bomer), Jane aka Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), Rita Farr aka Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby), and Victor Stone aka Cyborg (Joivan Wade), a “team” of “superheroes” who barely fit either description. Often fighting weird sex ghosts and getting thrown from the moon in between trying very hard not to save the world, the characters ended Season 2 on a massive cliffhanger: dead, trapped in candle wax in a carnival, with a massive monster ready to destroy humanity. Of course, it wasn’t exactly supposed to end that way… Due to coronavirus, the planned 10 episode long season was shortened to nine episodes. Now, we’ll finally find out what happened to Niles Caulder aka The Chief (Timothy Dalton) and his daughter Dorothy Spinner (Abigail Shapiro) after the deaths of the Doom Patrol.

Doom Patrol is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with Jeremy Carver, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Chris Dingess and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. The series is based on characters created for DC by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney and Bruno Premiani.
