Huge news for fans of EPIX’s series Pennyworth, as just revealed at the series DC FanDome: Explore The Multiverse panel: Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) is pregnant, thanks to her husband Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) in Season 2. But if Martha is pregnant [extremely Carrie Bradshaw voice] I had to ask myself, who is the baby???
Pennyworth, as you may have figured out from the name, is a DC Comics based drama series developed by Gotham expat Bruno Heller focusing on the exploits of a young Alfred Pennyworth before he was buttling it up in Gotham City. Though Pennyworth takes place decades before the events of the comics, focusing on Alfred forming his own security company and untangling conspiracies in London, the series has found time to include multiple characters from the books.
That includes future pearl aficionado Martha Kane; and Thomas Wayne, who is working as a CIA agent. In Season 2, the series will also welcome Lucius Fox, who was played in the movies famously by Morgan Freeman, and whose son Luke is played on the otherwise unrelated series Batwoman by Camrus Johnson.
But all that is avoiding the main question: who is this mysterious baby Martha Kane is pregnant with? There’s any number of characters who could be growing in her womb as we speak, ranging from villain Bane (a suggestion from my co-worker, and Pennyworth super-fan Meghan O’Keefe); to The Joker, who as we all know from the recent Joaquin Phoenix movie was probably Thomas Wayne’s son or something, I’m not entirely sure since I fell asleep for the middle third.
More likely, though, it’s something even bigger than either of those characters, otherwise Heller — who delicately weaved a story of Gotham City in Gotham, tantalizingly teasing the emergence of a classic character for five years* (*Commissioner Gordon’s mustache) — wouldn’t have made such a big deal about it at the DC FanDome panel.
I’ll throw out one possibility for the baby’s identity, and I feel pretty confident it tracks, given the information we know. If you look at the evidence, it’s pretty clear that Martha’s child will grow up to be… Superman. In fact, I would bet a whole jar of my Granny’s Peach Tea on it!
Whoever the baby is, we should find out when Pennyworth returns for Season 2, though maybe not because babies take a while to be born. At least, I think it takes a while? My friend Bruce told me that.
