2020 TCA Awards Honor ‘Watchmen,’ ‘Schitt’s Creek’

Watchmen was the breakout star at this year’s Television Critic’s Association’s 2020 Awards. The HBO drama based on the 1986 DC comic series snagged multiple awards for its first season, including Regina King‘s win for Individual Achievement In Drama for her role as Angela Abar, Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement In Movie, Miniseries, Or Special, and Program of the Year.

The superhero show first debuted last fall, and despite its massive success — it currently holds a 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on 114 reviews — the future of the show remains undetermined. In February, HBO named the first season a “Limited Series”, making future installments of Watchmen a possibility, but not directly setting the show up for Season 2.

Along with Watchmen, other TCA winners include The Last Dance for Outstanding Achievement In News and Information, Cheer for Outstanding Achievement In Reality Programming, A Black Lady Sketch Show for Outstanding Achievement In Sketch/Variety Shows, and Succession for Outstanding Achievement In Drama. In its final season, Schitt’s Creek won Outstanding Achievement In Comedy and Catherine O’Hara was awarded Individual Achievement In Comedy for her role as Moira Rose.

“Entertainment and culture are intertwined and in this challenging year, never has that intersection been more crucial as both a mirror to examine tough reflections and a rabbit hole to escape the noise and scares outside our homes. The 2019-2020 television season was both a challenge and a balm,” said Sarah Rodman, TCA President and executive editor at Entertainment Weekly. “This year offered up many high-quality options appealing to a wide swath of audiences with eclectic subjects ranging from sports and superheroes, to side-splitting sitcoms, darkly fascinating dramas, insightful documentaries, kid-friendly series, and more. We are excited to see what the future of television has in store, and we look forward to celebrating in-person next year as we come together to honor this medium that means so much to all of us.”
