‘Supergirl’ Ending After Season 6

The CW’s Supergirl is coming to an end. The superhero series, which first premiered in 2015, will wrap up for good in 2021 after Season 6, Entertainment Weekly reports. The show’s writers are already crafting up an ending for the show’s final 20-episode season, which will begin production this month in Canada.

Supergirl, which first premiered on CBS, transitioned to the The CW in 2016 for Season 2. The cast, which is led by Melissa Benoist in the titular role, also includes Chyler Leigh, Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines, Andrea Brooks, Azie Tesfai, Julie Gonzalo, Staz Nair and David Harewood. Previous stars included Mehcad Brooks, Jeremy Jordan, Chris Wood, Floriana Lima, Odette Annable and Calista Flockhart. Supergirl made history during Season 4 with the introduction of Dreamer (Maines), the first transgender superhero on TV.

Benoist, who starred on the show for all five past seasons, paid tribute to Supergirl after the news broke today. “To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement,” she wrote on Instagram. “Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.

“She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful. I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store,” she continued. “I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”

Supergirl joined The CW’s Arrowverse — which includes ArrowThe FlashDC’s Legends of TomorrowBlack Lightning and Batwoman — in Season 1 with the introduction of The Flash‘s Grant Gustin, who appeared in one episode of the first season. With today’s news, it marks the second CW Arrowverse show to be canceled after Arrow came to an end earlier this year.
